Hanging Pictures

Featured Replies

It's funny how the "easy" things turn out to be not so easy, and some of the "tough" things turn out to be not so tough.

I am ready to hand some pictures in our condo. Can I find picture hooks (that go into the wall)? No.

Tried Homepro (they only had the part that goes on the frame), Big C, and Zen.

Other suggestions?

If it helps, our walls are both pasterboard and cement/plaster (dpending on whether it's a load-bearing wall).

Thanks.

For the concrete walls, buy some concrete nails about an inch long and pound them in with a stout hammer. Noisy to put in but very strong.

For the plaster board wall, buy some expanding wall anchors and drill the appropriate size hole before installing.

We have yet to run into a landlord that objected to doing these things. The holes, even with big chips that sometimes fly off, are very easy to patch. Have fun!

I just finished hanging many pictures of various sizes and weights in my house. All the walls are cement (stucco over brick). I dislike concrete nails because invariably get chips spalling off, some very large. Simplest way I found is drill short slanted hole (6 mm carbide tip drill in hammer drill), then pack the hole with bamboo slivers or toothpicks, tap those flat with light hammer blows. Screw in a short flat-head screw, #8 is good diameter. Quick, simple reliable. Easy to patch hole if/when picture is removed.

How big are the pictures ?

if not to heavy Easy buy 'Blue Tack' [bought in News Agents in Central Plaza]

going up the stairs I used Blue Tack on 6 small framed pictures over 5 years ago, still stuck on the walls...

Now found something better from 'Home pro' they have 'Scotch' double sided tabs in different sizes, can say there very strong

My friends and family always ask what I would like them to bring with us when they come to visit me in Thailand. They imagine I'm starving for western food or wine or books... They are puzzled when I tell them what I really need! Yes, picture hooks were part of my last "order"...

I don't like concrete nails either so I use a variation on keeniau96's method. I drill a 3mm hole at a down angle and then use a pop rivet. But I don't "pop" it. I insert a suitably sized pop rivet, pointy end first, in the hole and the rivet head gives enough standoff from the wall to catch the picture wire. A very stable hanger and a hole small enough to patch easily.

Here's a suggestion I've been using for 30 years or more when needing to hang pictures on concrete or masonry walls

Just snip off the lower part of the "n" with side-cutters or pliers before hammering hardened nail into wall.

3M make these adhevise picture hooks, they are actually pretty good. I have hung some pictures using them and they have been up for the last 2 years, although not really suitable if the picture and frame is large or heavy.

Hammer drill a hole, insert plastic anchor and install suitable sized screw, leaving about a ¼ inch out. Hang picture. If hollow wall use small toggle bolt with nut and washer to hold tight to wall.

HomePro and others have large selection of anchors.
