When I first came to Bangkok in the late seventies, we drove through fairly wide, uncrowded roads from the airport - lily ponds along the edges.

What construction activities I saw were being carried out in caisson-type methods, sheet-piles and pumps. The ground-water table was at the level of the surface of the land.

Now, due to the large population, excessive pumping of ground water and the amount of construction that has taken place in thirty years, the water table has disappeared down to over 10m below ground level in most places. It is not likely to return quickly in Bangkok.

However Cobra Swamp (Suvarnabhumee) is still at zero level and they are having problems holding the runways down. :o:D So maybe that will be the hub for float planes before long.

I think I will buy some stocks in the khlong boats.

I have to say I'm always skeptical when I hear stories that start...in 20 years....cheap words most of the time.

Likewise I have heard similar stories about BKK sinking, flooding, and drying out...and more since 1981
