Perhaps you know that many Thais consider it bad luck to get a haircut on Wednesdays. If you didn't, now you do!

So with this knowledge, do you/will you avoid getting haircuts on Wednesdays in Thailand?

The reason I added the qualifiers based on religions beliefs is from my own experience. I am an atheist or agnostic (depending on the weather) but I avoid getting haircuts on Wednesdays in Thailand. Totally irrational, I am sure, but there you have it. I can't even really explain why.

Anyway, please have fun with the Wednesday haircut poll.

(Note: I am a bald is supposed to be I am bald, but on second thought I am a baldy would be funnier)

I try to avoid doing anything hazardous on a Thursday...when I had a paper route Thursday papers always had large ad supplements and things would always go wrong; the handlebars snapped off one Thursday and I had to get my little red wagon to finish my deliveries...I was humiliated...

in the film Castle on the Hudson the John Garfield character Tommy Gordon wouldn't take a risk on a Saturday...it didn't really matter as he went to the chair anyway :)

My Grandma always told me it was bad luck to cut your nails on a Sunday :)

yes and it is always bad luck to pick your nose in public on any day of the week, plus it is very distasteful. :D

I think you will find most traditional type barbers' shops are closed on Wednesdays.

Never having been to one of the salon type places so I don't know what they do - maybe no cutting, just groom the bouffant :)

I think one of the choices should have been, "Yes (& I am atheist/agnostic/non-religious) but I avoid getting my hair cut on Wednesdays to avoid upsetting my wife." Amazing how much clout my Thai wife has over my choices. :)

And she also keeps me from whistling after dark which is also considered bad luck.

I didn't know this. but if this is true then why are barbers shop open on Wednesday.

They get confused about the days of the week.

It is bad luck. Cut mine last night and the missus is still here :)

Where does this originate please ? s it Bangoko N,E,S everywher?

Here in border areas there are Lanna Lao Hmong Akha superstitions plus farng Jin haw radd ons

Youll see as well as local worhies and Lord Bhuddha a pictue of Ganesh,Krisna and someties Jesus and David Beckham for good measure or an old calebdar with some former Muay Thai hero.

I guess its like covering all the bases and those awful flashing neon stuff you see in India and Latin America with sacred Heat flasing

Alwys reminds me the lovely childish nature of the locals like a little girls scrapbook or a biys bedrrom pin ups of Big D nuts girl alongside Chelsea and Gerry Spice

It seems to keep them happily docile and unquestioning ,which in places where asking questions can damage your heath is an interesting metaphor for Islam(submission) via banality.Amusingly the Muzzies go for geometric and fractals pron easier to focus on when stoned than ManUtd or the paaaaaaaaantheon of Bhoddisatvas like the Tibetans have.

My immigration have as I point out a mispeeld sign in English.I do this each visit in a veru suportive expert in English and having shown ony 3 of my western degrees they are very defferential but of couse I over egged and one of them wants English classes.I obviously cannot charge on my visa,so we agreed I was only availble at wifes restaurant so everybody is happy.

I digress but be interested to know if Picture of Mr T is still on top shelf with the cream at Mae Sai Immigration?

:) I saw the realthing had made this post and opened it in a view to leave a humourous/silly message about wot no poll! then i opened it :D

Anyday is good for me, i use my own clippers and give myself a clip whenever required normally every 2 weeks...

I used to enjoy the 100 baht barbers, especially for cleaning my ears out... but now can't be @rsed sitting around waiting....

A lot of barbers don't open on Wednesdays. You need an "I'm not bothered but my regular barber is superstitious" choice.

I usually try to go on a wednesday as you can be sure there is no queue

There would have to be two dozen plus barbers in my adjoining sois, and all are closed on wednesday, so no option :)

The used to execute people in Thailand on Wednesdays, before the head was axed the condemned had to have a hair cut ~ hence bad luck to have it done on that day. :)

well done the gist must be cause the barbers in 2nd life all closed that day too or no heaven for the hairy

What a releif for the baldies free to be topped 24/7

Yep, I have heard this and no hair cut for me on Wed. and I do mine at home. I am putting in my veggie garden now but no planting of seeds is allowed on Wed. Can transplant, like the tomato's I started in pots, but no seeds go in the ground on Wed, so Wed has become my main afternoon beer day.

I didn't know this. but if this is true then why are barbers shop open on Wednesday.

Shaves and manicures only I am told.

This is one of multiple ancient shamanistic beliefs among the Thais.

Others include:

* don't get married on a Wednesday

* don't bury people on a Friday

* don't move house on a Saturday

* don't shave a child's head on a Tuesday

* don't pick crops or have teeth extracted on a Thursday

... and many more exhortations and restrictions which have parallels in Western "old wives' tales"

* wearing black to go on a date on Saturday endows you with extra charm

* don't wear black to visit sick people

* if a gecko trills just as you are leaving the house, you should stay home instead

* don't hit or tap your plate while eating

* do not step directly on the threshold of any door

* do not give perfume or shoes to your romantic partner

* it's bad luck if a bird shits on your head

I intentionally get haircuts on Wednesdays because there may be less of a wait.

Well aren't you lucky :)

Most of the hair cut places i go to are closed. So it is kinda hard to get a haircut On Wed even if i wanted to :)

:) Im not sure if I should laugh at you or cry alongside you. People here we have a very brave man who has faced some of the toughest stuff the world can throw at him, YET, a quiet little 48kg lady has him under the thumb :D ....how do they do it? Dont answer that :D

They don't know NOTHING!

In Germany the Hair service-Stations are closed on Mondays....

One should have his hair cut only when the Moon is in Leo! :)

^& they (the germans) call them 'Hair Service Stations' <deleted>, what happened to the barber or hair salon?

Can you get your car fill up and serviced at the same time you get your hair cut, whats the go?

* it's bad luck if a bird shits on your head

Obvious. :)

not only that, apparently you will go bald.

Well it happened to me here when I was a boy and believe me, it made a big impression (and a gross smelly mess):

(Golden "Gates of Heaven" in Florence, Italy)

Didn't go bald.

I have been quite lucky in life.

However, the Christian based afterlife, OK, I am toast if there is one!

However, still no haircuts on Wednesdays in Thailand.

I warn you all.

Visit a hairdressers on Wednesday`s and you will be cast down into the depths of hel_l fire.
