Mr Indian restaurant burns in Rawai

The heat from the fire was enough to warp the metal of the

shop's roll-down door.

RAWAI, PHUKET: A fire at the 'Mr Indian' restaurant on Wiset Road last night caused an estimated 300,000 baht in damages and brought an abrupt end to the meals customers were enjoying.

Chalong Police Inspector Chana Suthimas said it took a total of four fire trucks about 30 minutes to contain the blaze, which broke out in the two-unit shophouse restaurant at about 11:30pm.

The fire started as guests were still enjoying their meals in the restaurant, which, as its name suggests, specializes in the culinary offerings of the subcontinent.

By the time Chalong Police Superintendent Chinnarat Rittakananond and investigating officers arrived, a crowd of Thais and foreigners had gathered to watch the blaze engulf the two-story building.

The damage is initially estimated at about 300,000 baht.

Owner Yashsal Singh said the fire started on the second floor.

All inside the building managed to escape; there were no reports of injury.

Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

They suspect faulty wiring may have been the culprit.

It's also in Chalong, not Rawai.

Sheesh....nice to see the PG reporting standard is up to it's usual quality.

And it's not on Wiset road either..............

And the picture is not of the actual restaurant, which is located in the shop house to the right.

Anyway, good to see his large TV appears to have escaped unscathed. Bollywood will be thankful.

Sorry to hear about the fire at Mr. India. I enjoyed the Indian food there every now and than, and the owner is a nice guy, when he is not chasing you with name cards.

PG report is correct by the way. The road from Chalong circle down to the pier is called Viset Road and is located in Tambon Rawai. Actually, the road to the pier is the border between Tambon Chalong and Tambon Rawai.

I thought the whole of Chalong was Tambon Rawai.

Is there even a Tambon Chalong?

Yes there is a Tambon Chalong. It goes from the circle towards Wat Chalong and at least until the TOT, as the Moo Baan - Chao Faa Thani, is in T.Chalong.

Chao Fa East up to Nabon is T. Chalong as well I think. Not sure about it though.

Yes it's in Rawai, I lived on the opposite side of the road (Chalong) a few years back. Wither side of the road even has different refuse collectors.

Amazing - thanks for the information. I went there last night and he said he'd be out of action for two months. That's the biggest part of the "high season" gone.

Google Maps has the road labelled as "Sunrise", but as it is also called "Sunrise" spelt using Thai letters, I doubt if it's official.

I remember an image I posted some time ago, which confirms that Rawai extends all the way up to the Chalong pier road:

And the Post Office just south of the circle has always been known to me as Rawai Post Office. It's odd that I've tended to think that Chalong Circle is in the middle of Chalong, whereas it's actually on the southernmost border.

Thats a great image with the rawai moo breakdown.. Do you have other areas of the island ??

I'm afraid not.

I just found the previous thread on the subject, here:

The URL of the web site that had that image doesn't work any more.

PS. I had my last Mr India Madras last night - from the freezer. I knew I should've ordered more last time.
