Some notes for anybody upgrading their TOT ADSL service (this is in Chiang Mai). I was originally on the "silvercyber" plan, which was 1.5 Mbps for 700 baht. Apparently new packages were introduced some time ago (didn't catch it because I wasn't in the country for a while), all of them faster and some of them cheaper. Some have said that TOT should change you over automatically, but this was clearly not the case with me.

Went to TOT and chose the 4 Mbps/790 baht per month option and they said it would take one day to kick in. After a couple days, called TOT and the person said they hadn't received the upgrade paperwork yet. Called again the next day and was told that the wires to my house wouldn't support 4 Mbps, only 2 Mbps. So opted for that package, at 490 baht/month.

Was sent an SMS with my new username and pass word for the router, and plugged them in.

Speeds went from a consistent 1.3 Mbps download, .4 Mbps upload to 1.75 Mbps download and same upload.

I have had very consistent service over the last two years (was spotty before that), so I hope it continues!

TOT speeds at the various service levels depend very much on the connections and the quality of local loops. Here on Phuket the members of our computer club have been logging the international connection speeds (Phuket->San Francisco), never mind the Thai speeds unless you are very interested in the local sites (and even then many are actually hosted outside Thailand). We have found that TOT SilverCyber customers usually have better speeds than the GoldCyber, apparently because more people have signed up for the gold and wind up jamming the lines. The newest is DiamondCyber, and some of our group are getting steady 3.5 Mb/s but other do far worse, often below 1 Mb/s. I got "upgraded" form Silver to Gold because of persistent lousy service. And it is even worse now, rarely exceeding 1 Mb/s. Note all of the speeds mentioned are downloading, up is usually around 200 Kb/s, and varies far less than the down speeds.

So if anybody signing up for TOT check the local conditions and be aware that the SilverCyber is probably better than the Gold, as well as a bit cheaper. Your mileage can and probably will vary, just hope for the best.

I live in BangTao, Phuket and have the TOT SilverCyber package.

I find it is ok early in the morning but slows right down around midday?

I was thinking of upgrading to Gold package but having second thoughts after reading your comments........

I spend a lot of time using a VPN connecttion to connect remotely to my office PC in Perth, Australia. Again the refresh rates when connected via VPN really slow down after midday?

Any advice much appreciated.

Regards,

Aidan

Does TOT actually still sell/call their internet packages, SilverCyber, Goldcyber, etc., in Phuket? I thought they stopped marketing/selling those packages about 6 months ago and now sell their Basic Fit and Power Fit ,which go from 2Mb - 8 Mb download and either 512kb or 1Mb upload. They also have some faster packages if you live within 1KM of the TOT connection station, but I don't think it advertised on their web site...you have to ask their service center. See below TOT web site (and hopefully you have your Google Translate turned on in your browser)

I have the TOT 4Mb/512Kb package here in Bangkok (the highest speed they could run to my house)...have had it for about 3 months (I switched from another more expensive ISP) and the TOT package works fine and has been very, very reliable (I've only experience one couple hour down period which I'm assuming was TOT's problem vs some issue with my computer). Your experience may vary.

Speedtests to the U.S. normally give me 1Mb international speeds, sometimes a little slower, sometimes a little faster, and everyone once in while speeds exceeding 3Mb. In Thailand speeds are approx 3.5Mb which is the actual, real world max "IP" speed for a 4Mb TOT package due to ADSL overhead/control data elements. The 4Mb speed quoted is the modem sync speed (counts the overhead/control data elements) and my modem does sync at 4096Mbs.

When you sign up for one the newer plans your domain name won't include the @silvercyber, @goldcyber, etc., type server name, but a @tothome server domain name. Apparently, the newer packages are running on a different domain server which supports the higher speeds.
