My salesman is in a quandary.

For living in and driving around Bangkok should he buy a Honda Civic or a Mitsubishi Triton. Both are about the same price but which is more economic. He doesn't need a truck to carry stuff only himself and his family of 3.

I think Honda, is uses the new technology appropriate to their car earlier than any other car company. Of course for very advance technologies you have to pay more money,

I recommend buying Honda if you compare the same class of cars, I also think the maintenance is also less expensive for Honda than any other cars in its class

I totally agree with the Honda compared to the Mitsu but not on that the Honda is cheaper to maintain than any other car in it's class. The most economical alternative is a Toyota, quality is also better than the Honda while finishing in the Toyota is on the dull side. In short, the Honda looks nicer but the Toyota has better quality. The Honda is more show-off and Thai's love that, a farang buying one pays for that regardless of if he thinks the same or not. There is a bery good reason why Honda doesn't want pick-ups and Honda taxis on the Thailand market... It would destroy the perception that the Honda is more exclusive.

But I admit that the Honda looks nicer inside :)

You are attempting to compare apples and oranges. The Triton is bigger, heavier and being a diesel will deliver better economy than the Honda gasoline engine, especially in city driving.

Not me Gary but....

That is why I asked. I was unsure what to say to him. Diesel maybe more economic but he would have to cart all that weight around.

OT but...

As would this.

The 1.8 honda will return better mileage than the triton. The 2.0 honda will return similar mileage, though the tank in the triton is much larger so will give a longer range. I've driven both and the triton (or any pickup) is just too cumbersome for city driving. If you don;t need the rear space don't get it!

I'd buy a Honda with a small engine, could give you a good mileage. The Triton isn't really good for cities, parking. The Honda also comes with more features.

Why's on earth has he narrowed it down to these two? That's crazy, they are so different. If he wants a city car for a family of 3 and he really cares about fuel consumption or fuel prices, he should buy a smaller, inexpensive car Yaris, Jazz, City etc for 300k less....how many years worth of fuel is that?!

Totally agree. The Toyota Vios springs to mind. However, Thais can nearly always find a use for a pick up. If economy is the real issue and to be honest it does not appear to be, then you have to factor in insurance, depreciation etc. and the OP has not mentioned any of these other factors which affect ownership costs.
