Charging Battery

Featured Replies

I don’t know what happened my battery suddenly stopped being charges. And the computer says “plugged in, not charging. a day before it was working perfectly

Is ther a setting that I need to check under Windows Vista .

Try taking the battery out and putting it back, could be a dirty contact.

I'll move this to Technology, not really teaching related :D

Yes, and you can also clean the connector with a little alcohol (not beer or whisky - the rubbing alcohol from drug store, the one that you cannot drink :) ) using a Q-Tip. Allow a few minutes to dry well. That should help clean the connectors.

You can use the rest of the alcohol and Q-Tips to clean the outside of your remote controls if they are also dirty. Use with moderation! :D

I don't understand the question! What battery or equipment are you referring to? I see people are answering but surely they are making assumptions about the equipment you are asking about.

We are making some assumptions, but since he's referring to a computer saying 'plugged in not charging' and referring to Vista settings we assume a Windows laptop.

Besides, the advice to remove the battery and clean terminals is universal.

1 - What make of laptop is it?

2 - What model is it?

3 - How old is it?

Search google using the laptop name / model and the words "battery" "charge" or something similar, you might find that other people have encountered the same problem. I know that there are a few reported incidences of Dell laptop batteries showing similar symptoms due the a fault developing in the charger.

Keep us updated with anything you discover.

Good luck!

If you use your laptop with the battery in but run it off the mains all the time, this has a bad affect on your battery. From the sounds of it I would say you need a new battery.

Not necessarily a valid assumption.

Over the years I have had the charging circuit of the laptop fail on two machines.

Sorry, to be clearer, it is a hpdv3000, and when I plug in the charger the little battery icon normally says "plugged in, charging", but never goes charges and always says 0% and sometimes it says, "plugged in, not charging".

Based on some of the suggestion I already cleaned the contacts and problem still there.

First call would be a replacement battery, if you can get to one of the electronics malls there are outlets selling used batteries that you could try rather than shelling for a new (expensive) one.

Amorn should be able to re-cell your existing battery pack too.

A quick Google using "hp dv3000 plugged in charging" reveals that this has been a common problem for many people, here are two examples:

HP Pavilion New Battery Issue

HP Laptop Plugged in Charging

Firstly you should try the HP Battery check utility to see if that provides any information:

HP DV3000 Battery Check Instructions <<- gives instructions for the HP battery test utility. You might need to download the HP support assistant first.

If that does not work, how old in your laptop.

If it is fairly new, is the battery covered by warranty?

If it is a couple of years old then the battery most likely needs replacement, they are not that expensive on e-bay, (but there is no guarantee that will solve the problem).

What does the HP battery check utility report??

Could very be one (or more) of the cells making up the battery has failed. This, in turn, will cause the small circuit board inside the battery (usually connected to the battery connector itself) to stop charging the battery, fool the circuit into thinging a full charge has been obtained, etc. Botomline is you can get the very indications like you are getting. Probably time for a new battery, especially if you have had it around 2 years. I had a very similar failure on my Toshiba about 6 months ago and the problem appeared fast.
