G'day,

This has got to be one of the strangest things I encounter here. I am shopping for a laptop and saw this Acer Timeline X that they have on promotion at Acer's Thailand facebook page.

Saw it at the Acer store (by Chi Chang) at the airport plaza in Chiang Mai, then at the IT City in the same building. They were offering it at 33,063 THB. By chance, I saw a brochure of the promotion at Siam TV (going for 29 900THB plus VAT). Didn't have the best of experience previously at Siam TV, so I went back to both the 2 stores for a price match. To my surprise, they said the price on the promotion is wrong, and this is even after I had spotted the same brochure tucked away in both stores; they didn't even know of the website.

Even stranger still, the Acer store (also by Chi Chang) at Pantip Plaza had the "correct" price.

The stores had the brochures with the promotional price, yet they refused to honor the price!

If this is one of the strangest things you've encountered since being in Thailand, you need to get out more.

You might want to do some research on failure rates of the brand you are looking at also.

I must look into this also as I've had my laptop for about 6 months now, my friend has had his desktop for almost a year and has just bought himself a new laptop all of the same brand. I've not had a moments problem with it and I've never personally met anyone who has had problems with this brand. Maybe I'm just lucky? Maybe the brand USED to be poor but has upped their game in recent times.

I would look to ACER before other brands when the time comes to upgrade because in my opinion and personal experience they offer probably the best value for money.

That is just the opinion of myself and I'm sure that of the people I know who use this brand. What ever the OP buys I hope they get what they're looking for. :)

I've had several ACER laptops over the years, my current favorite I've had for about 4 years, never had a single problem with it. For those times when you might have a problem ACER probably has the best support network in Thailand.

Ive had my Acer laptop (5720Z) for five years now and had zero problems.

As far as the price goes i know from experience this company will clear old stock by means of a cashback..

ie. you pay normal price for it at point of sale, you apply to the companies website, enter details, get a code from them for your case, then send docket, code and other details back to the company..they then send you a check for the cashback amount..

At least this is what happened in my case in Australia..

I dont know whether it is the same here but maybe you encountered some less than competent Thai sales staff who didnt know the right procedures and just promoted the after cash back price??

I dont really think this topic is about whether you like a particular notebook or not, more about how the OP feels like he was mislead by advertising that wasn't honored at the dealer?

Had my Aspire for 7 years - no problems just keeps on going. All our techs at work use Acer notebooks and they are on the go non-stop. We hardly have any problems with them.

Yes the OP was mislead. This can be a normal occurrence in the Thai business community. What is your option? Either take the price or go else where. :)

Correct. Not strange at all. Buy at those stores which have the new price.

Indeed, I bought it at the other Acer store that had the new lower price. They couldn't believe it when I told them that their other store said the price was incorrect.

The most reliable laptop manufacturers are....

1. ASUS

2. Toshiba

3. Sony

The WORST are....

3. Acer

2. Gateway

1. HP

Edit: And to comment OP's post.

It is just another way for the shops to unload their inventory to unsuspecting clients which they have perhaps purchased at a higher price. Always check, double check, and then compare. TAKE YOUR TIME! Relative prices on laptops always go down. Either you get a lower price, or you get better specs. You can not lose by waiting.

My eldest son recently got a Acer, failed in 2 weeks. as per post 13 my next will be Asus who also have international warranty which many others don't seems odd for a computer that is designed to go with you.
