I have been a user of TTT (Maxnet/3BB) Premier 3 mb service for about a year now. It is not that speedy, but I do find I'm pretty happy with the stability and mostly trouble free service. I also do a lot of downloading from torrent sites and have never been throttled with the premier package. I'm told the Indy package does that.

I am now moving and am told TTT is not available and I will have to use TOT.

I have seen on their website they offer "basic fit" and Power fit". Other than the upload speed and price is there any difference in the 2 packages? Is Powerfit better for international surfing?

Thanks....

TOT makes no reference to faster international speed between the Power Fit and Basic Fit packages, only the upload speed is faster with the Power Fit.

Depending on where your move to, you may not be able to get the Power Fit due to TOT equipment limitations. In my particular area here in western Bangkok the top TOT speed to my moobaan is the Basic Fit 4Mb/512Kb package...couldn't get the Power Fit 4MB/1Mb package, which is really OK as the great, great, great majority of my internet use is browsing (primarily a download function) versus uploading of files. And the technician installing my new line with the TOT package said the 6Mb and 8Mb packages were only available if living within 1Km of the TOT central station/DSLAM location.

My TOT package has been rock steady for the 3 months or so I've had it, except for one 3 hour period where it apparently went down during the protests. To international web sites, I get about 25% of the rated max speed (4Mb)...that is, around 1Mb to most international sites...sometimes I get a little slower...sometimes I get a little faster. And there have been a few times when I got around 3Mb...TOT must have turned off their internet shaping for a little while. In-Thailand speed is approx 3.5Mb which is the max "IP" speed since to DSL control bytes are using up around 12% of the max/raw speed (4096Mb). My modem does sync with the DSLAM at 4096Kb since I've got very good SNR and Attn stats for my line. Your experience may vary. Good luck and Cheers.

Thanks very much for the info. I suspect from what you say that I may not be able to get the higher rates as well. I am moving to a house that is about 4 kms from Hua Hin, so will probably have to be satisfied with what I can get there.

Cheers

You never know...I hear parts of Hua Hin have pretty good/fast internet. You may get internet lucky with your location. Cheers.

Wouldn't it be GREAT if this read: Austrailia AND Thailand. LOL but there I go dreaming again.

But Land of Scams (LOS) hold very high marks for corruption, which just might be "improving/incresaing" every day.

<snip>

have never been throttled with the premier package. I'm told the Indy package does that.

I'd love to know where that misinformation comes from. I used TT&T Maxnet Indy for years and was never throttled. I was getting 5 mbps d/l on a 6 mbps service.

Ok, have got TOT 4 mb service now at my house in Hin Lek Fai (Hua Hin). I was going to go for the Power fit 8 mb service but was told that the 4 mb service was the best I could hope for in my location. Well the speed is exactly as advertized using Speedtest to a BKK server, so I know there is no problem with my line. Actually the speed to the USA is very good (sometimes) as well in the 3 mb region.

What is frustrating is the inconsistency, click on a link once to an international site and loads fast, click again 30 seconds later and it will not load at all

I had 3mb Premier from Maxnet in Songkhla and although not lightning fast, as least it was consistent.

Does TOT offer any thing comparable that will give better international service?

None that I know of regarding TOT home packages that give you increased international speed.

Here in western Bangkok, I'm on the 4Mb/512Kb TOT Basic Fit package just like you...nothing faster to my area/moobaan...TOT has all the phone lines in my particular area/moobaan. For the first few weeks I was on the 4Mb package I noticed my international speedtests gave me 2 to 3Mb speeds to some servers pretty consistently. At about the two week point I started getting only 1Mb on the average to international sites, but it's a consistent 1Mb. Almost like TOT flipped a switch from giving me higher international speed to just regular backbone speed at about 25% of the package's max speed (kinda like speed throttling/shaping). The in-Thailand speed remained 3.5Mb on all speed test programs.. Now, there are times that speedtests to the US give me up to 2 to 3Mb but normally that's around 8pm-11pm and on Saturday afternoon the speed slows down a little. I will have to say the 3-4 months I had TOT (this time) the reliability has been about 99.99% and I can live with a consistent 1Mb international speed and 3.5Mb in-Thailand speed.

Also, I've noticed that many times speedtests will give a high reading on the "first" test to a certain location, especially if using Chrome. I use IE8 for my surfing but also have Chrome loaded to play around with it and use it for speedtests. Both IE8 and Chrome will many times give me a high/happy "first" speed reading to location X, but when I run it again and again it falls back to a more repeated and lower reading. Additionally, many times Chrome will give significantly higher speedtest results to many sites, especially international sites, and I expect this Chrome reading is closer to my actual speed since IE8 has more add-ins that probably bog down it's speed a little. The 1Mb average I mentioned above is when using IE8; Chome gives me just a little more average for the little bit I've used it during testing, but Chrome has less features/add-ins/etc, so I just use it occasionally.

I also use VOIP and the TOT 4Mb package works fine for this...clear calls to and from the States.

OK, thanks for the info. Will watch what happens over the next couple of weeks. Also will try repeating the speed test a couple times to see what happens.
