Well done Murf, I used to get a lift to work in a new one in from a budding Rally driver in 1970, Castle Cary to Yeovilton in deepest Somerset, the ride from Scary Cary, terrifying in the fog!

Very sweet!

sounds like a nice Vtec engine when the rpm flies up.

the ITB looks great!

beautiful project- a full retro package! :)

it would be hel_l fun to boost this project haha.

looks like the engine has about 160-180hp, is that the approx hp figure?

Nice piece of work, now join in "euroclassic" or trackday. We have one guy who's building a capri 1, so that would be fun

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I haven't had the car dyno'd, but i estimate the power to be around 120bhp / 130bhp at the wheels.

What are you using for carbs? I have seen lots of 40 DCOE's on river taxis. Just in case?

Did the car come standard here with A/C?

Posted

I am using throttle bodies, (injection) not carbs.

I thought most river taxis were diesel? I don't think i have ever seen a petrol one...

I'm not sure if cars in the 70's came with air con or not, but most classics in Thailand have been fitted with air con. It's not a major job.

Interesting what engine did you use?

They are ten's of hot river taxis. . I would like to think the guys use them during the day for income and race them at the weekend. Mostly Toyota or Nissan I assume. 4 banger with Webers and headers, sometime the headers are chromed sometime not. Problem is I never have a camera when I see them. Have seen them in Bang Kruay, even one down near Bang Na.

Nice motor brings back many memories when I made my Mk 1 GT Cortina to look like a Lotus Cortina.

Here's some of the history you may like.

There was, in the early days of the Escort Mk 1, a higher performance version for rallies and racing, the Escort Twin Cam, which featured an engine with a Lotus-made eight-valve twin camshaft head fitted to the 1.5 L non-crossflow block, which had a bigger bore than usual to give a capacity of 1,558 cc..

This engine had originally been developed for the Lotus Cortina.

Production of the Twin Cam, which was originally produced at Halewood, was phased out as the RS1600 was developed.

The Mark I Escorts became very successful as a rally car, and they eventually went on to become one of the most successful rally cars of all time.

The Ford works team was practically unbeatable in the late 1960s / early 1970s, and arguably the Escort's greatest victory was in the ( 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally ) being driven by Finnish legend Hannu Mikkola a great rally driver.

This gave rise to the famous Escort Mexico (1.6 L "Kent" engined) special edition road versions in honour of the rally car.

Out of self defense no doubt :whistling: .... It's the only real way to survive... It's also a bit liberating to a great degree.

Very nice car and restoration. I was brought up on Escorts and had two mark 1's, both 1300 E's. I then had a 1300 and 1600 Sport mark 2 and then a few RS 2000's but unfortunately never a mexico. YOurs is the first 2 door escort I have ever seen in Thailand, although I do see the occasional small engined 4 door Mark 1 driving around in Chiangmai. What is the history of it? I mean was it imported as a one off or are there a few more running around?
