Hi

I have an ADSL connection with ToT - 4Mb / 512kb. Works quite well most of the time with download speeds up to about 3.9Mb/s and upload around 400kb/s. Not so good when the internet cafes are full!

Anyway, my question is about ToT's email service, if indeed there is one. I want to set up my email client (Outlook Express) with ToT to send and receive emails in the normal way. I'm currently using my csloxinfo account to do this - left over from dial-up days - but this is not free and will soon expire. I also have an account with my professional organisation that forwards messages to csloxinfo but, because of changes to their service, I shall no longer be able to send messages via their SMTP server. I am looking for an alternative and as ToT is my ISP I would expect them to provide me with some sort of email service.

I have a username - 'phonenumber'@tothome - and a password - 'phonenumber' that I used to set up my ADSL modem/router. Whether or not this has any relevance to setting up an email account with ToT I have no idea.

The only information provided by ToT is as follows:

ค่ๅ OUTLOOK DNS 203.113.127.199 , 203.113.24.199

SMTP:smtp.totisp.net

There is no other info. on how to set up a mail account so does anyone out there know how to do this? I've had a bit of a Google and searched this forum but I haven't found the answer.

Thanks,

DM

Set up a Gmail account and never have to change it again, it can be used as a pop mail account and is free.

I don't think an email account comes with the "currently" sold TOT DSL packages like your 4Mb package...it's different from TOT's earlier days up to about a year ago when an email account did come with their packages which was their Goldcyber, Silvercyber, etc., packages.. As mentioned above, get yourself a Gmail account and just do POP3/IMAP email send/receives...and you can also use Gmail web based if desired. Another plus is when you change your ISP you still have the same email address (i.e., your Gmail address). I've switched ISP's numerous times over the years, but it never impacted me email address-wise because I have Gmail email accounts.

I think that you will find that you do have an e-mail account with them. I have one with my ADSL connection, but it is hardly worth the trouble because they will not allow mail forwarding on account of the amount of spam that would otherwise go through their servers. I agree with the other comments that a web based e-mail account is much better and in any case I would not touch Outlook Express with a barge pole in view of its security issues.

You don't have an email account with TOT, or a least an account to receive emails. You can only send emails using their SMTP service. Works well with older programs that can't deal with the SSL OR TSL encryption which GMail requires in order to send a message.

GMail is what I recommend also. Less SPAM than Hotmail or LiveMail as they now call it. I've been using my GMail account for many years with no problems. Can't say the same for Hotmail or Yahoo. I let the Yahoo account die years ago and only keep the Hotmail account account to give to those whom I don't what to receive SPAM from. I never read the messages in that account. I have no interest in learning how to make my Penis larger or who has the best discount for Viagra. Not to mention the folks from Nigeria who have just informed me that I the beneficiary of a large sum of money from someone whom I never ever known. Outlook just receives the messages and then automatically deletes them periodically (about every 14 days) to keep the account active.

By the way, if you are wanting to have a Hotmail account. You don't need to use Outlook Connector (what a waste) to retrieve the messages into Outlook. You can now retrieve Hotmail messages using POP. Information is on the Web how to set up Outlook to use POP to retrieve messages. Of course, M$ will never tell you how to do it.

The only problem with GMail, is the browser interface really sucks. You really need an email client.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention one other thing. Since your are changing your email account, you should also think about moving away from 'Outlook Express' as your email client.

It's not supported by Microsoft anymore. It died after Bill Gates left Microsoft, although Bill is reported to have used it extensively while he was at Microsoft. Just before the huge security hole was discovered in Hotmail, where anyone could log onto any Hotmail account. It is not included in any of the newer versions of Windows and it receives no security updates. It's a huge security risk!

Windows XP will be history in less than 5 years. Microsoft's published termination date for Windows XP is in 2014. Given the popularity and acceptance of Windows 7, I think they will stick to it. You will be forced to change again. Now is the time to move on.

There's quite a few free email clients available, from the cutesy or simple to the more sophisticated and secure, depending on your likes/dislikes. Some will even notify "you got mail!" without the application being open. Some are portable and can even be installed on a 'flash drive' so that you can use the client at an internet cafe. Do a Google search for 'free email clients'.

Thanks for all of the replies.

As suggested I have now set up a GMail account. I'm using OE as my email client and the setup seems to work OK. In view of the negative comments about OE I shall now look into using a different client. Any specific recommendations?

In case you use other Microsoft products like Word, Excel, etc., maybe just get/use the full version of Outlook versus Outlook Express. I use Outlook on both my Windows 7 laptop and my XP laptop. I got Outlook 2007 running on my Win 7 computer (it was running on XP Professional before upgrading to Win 7) and Outlook 2003 on my XP computer...I'll probably upgrade to Outlook 2010 (along with Word 2010, Excel, 2010, etc) over the next year. No rush in upgrading to another email client software as they all do basically the same thing (i.e., send and receive email...how challenging/hard can that be). Yea, yea, I know someone will say once the program is not being updated anymore then it's more susceptible to being infected with a virus, causing a conflict with other software, etc. Yea, I know.
