About 3 months ago my Acer 4300 scanner went on holiday. I decided to replace it as the easy way out, after all they don't cost much. My wife's cousins asked for the broken one and said that they would have it repaired and then tack it onto their PC. They reported back and said that they had scoured Pattatya and couldn't find anybody to do what must be a minor job. I have looked all over the Net and tried out several places in Pantip Plaza without success. Does anybody know of an outfit who offers this service?

That appears to be a very old model from quick Google so likely no parts would be available to fix anything and drivers are likely not up to date either. Things have changed a great deal in the last few years and now most such equipment is not worth working on if more than a couple of years old or you don't enjoy doing it yourself.

As scanner now only accounts for about 600 baht or so addition to a printer and you save real estate believe it is time to change from the 'never buy multi use equipment' mantra to combination scanner/printer/copier as normal purchase. I just put that into practice with purchase of Canon MP258 for 2,190 as selling at both Big C and Lotus.

hummz.. How does your wifes cousin know it must be a minor job? Perhaps you'd be better of buying them a new one too  :D

She might not know but I do. If the water pump on your transport gives up the ghost do you buy a new car/truck? Have now decided to take the thing to bits and sort if myself - if possible.

If it's going to be more hassle to fix it than buy a new one, yeah, I'd go for the new car ;)

Yikes, the amount of time alone to find somewhere to fix it, then parts, labour and the likelyhood another part will fail on such an old thing - would they be better going to work instead for 300baht a today? would only need a week or so and they can buy a new one with a 1yr guarante.

After exhausting immediate avenues of repair, and if the truck is only worth 2000baht and trying fixing the water pump will take days of my time, involve family members soliciting help and ultimately a right PITA then yeah I'll just replace the dam_n thing and throw it in the bin.

While it might be a minor job to replace the parts, its acquiring the part that wll be problematic. I confidently say that in this case it best to call them to stop wasting their time, apologises for sending it and tell them to stick it in the bin. Someone will dig it out from the garbage and then it will sit in some small IT shop for 20 years until they finally really dispose of it, looking at the size of it I guestimate it already 10 years old?

In meantime, they can use any internet shop to scan to usb, if you think the volume average person scans this will be more cost effective for years to come..
