Dr Laura And The Word Ni#@%Er

Featured Replies

Now hopefully we can have a debate about this subject without it getting deleted

I was watching CNN the other day about this American woman who on a radio show who used the word Nigger in the following context

Black Lady calls up the show and asks how to deal with her white husbands friends asking her how does a black person feel about this subject and that subject etc and says she feels her husbands friends are being racist the doctor says she does not think they are being racist but the word N%$#R came up by the caller and the Dr says hel_l you can hear the word N$#@r every day you just have to turn on HBO at this point the woman caller get pissed that the white doctor has dared to use that word and immediatley took offense and took it out of context and accused the doctor of being a racist which if you listen to the interview it was taken completely out of context..

Next minute the doctor is saying sorry and leaving her job and everyone is ganging up on her it was totally ridiculous

LETS GET REAL PEOPLE

The only people that use that word these days is Black people and the doctor was right just turn on HBO and you will hear it over and over again being said by black people now if they dont like the word and completely understanbdable then they should lead by example and not use it but to try and ban a word from being used by white people but used every day by black people is a bit ridiculous

Dont you think

If its SO OFFENSIVE then dont use it PERIOD

I would never hear the word if I did not watch HBO and listen to comic like Chris Rock

Is this another topic on the use of the word Farang? :whistling:

Unless you can link this topic to the use of the F-word FARANG, and right quick, this topic has a life expectancy of a microwaved fruit fly.

Been linked twice already :)

I'm sure it could go that way if required JT.

Not really, the OP clearly wants to talk about an American talk show host's political problems. Really nothing to do with Thailand, is it?

How about is the N word the same as the F word?

Depends who calls me Farang if its anyone that knows me I have a problem with it if they dont know me and refer to me as a farang thats OK to me both words are derogatory comments

Then what does Dr. Laura have to do with that question? Answer -- nothing at all.

As an american jing you are being politically correct and trying to avoid the question

sorry folks, not Thailand related but I will move it to outside the box if you want to continue the discussion?

I grew up in the north western suburbs of Melbourne - 90% of the people at my high school had southern European back grounds (most born o/s or parents born o/s) ... so, basically, they were <deleted> ... and they called themselves <deleted>, and we (the Aussies) called them <deleted>. And they were proud to be <deleted>.

The term <deleted>, farang or nigger are not really racist in themselves. It's usually the context that makes them racist.

Not really, I hope Dr. Laura rots in hel_l, she is a total bigot against gays as well, how's that for non-PC?

Dont know about that Jing but one thing is for sure SHE HAS A RIGHT TO HER OPINION

The point is the only reason this word is still around is it is used by Black people and that was all she was trying to say before it was all taken out of context and now she is villified for nothing that she did that was bad she just told the truth she did use the word to refer to HBO and people using it but NOT in a derogatory manner in any way other than being white and daring to utter the word.

Like I said I would never hear the word in day to day life unless it is coming out of a black persons mouth on HBO rapping or Chris Rock

All Americans are not PC and I agree that she did nothing wrong in the context that you have explained. However, it is time for everyone to stop using the word and that includes blacks.

My exact thought UG

how can a race complain about the word when they use it in there everyday language and then when another race uses it its a problem I really dontknow why Dr Laura is aplogizing all over the place she should of stuck to her guns she did not use it in a racist manner but she is back tracking like crazy when this issue needs to be bought up and discussed instead she is letting them make her out to be a villian when she really has done nothing wrong.

The US is a strange place sometimes

As an African-American, I feel that Dr. Laura Schlessinger was wrong and right. There is a very negative connotation and long history attached to the word "n****r". The word usually conjures up thoughts of racism

Here's where I think that Dr. Laura is right: She correctly pointed out that there are some Blacks (especially rappers and comedians) who use the N-word casually. She said "black guys use it all the time. Turn on HBO, listen to a black comic, and all you hear is n---, n----, n----."

Dr. Laura was merely making the case that it is hypocritical for a Black person to use the word and then get angry when a non-Black person uses the word. Also, Dr. Laura was referring to when a variation of the N-word (nigga) is used as a "term of endearment

The fact that Dr. Laura used the N-word in and of itself does not make her a racist, and I was not the least bit offended by the context in which she used it. She never directed the word at the caller and the word was not used in a hateful or condescending way. I surmise that Dr. Laura was trying to illustrate a very valid point that it is hypocritical for Black folks to use the N-word, and it is also, preposterous that blacks use it as "a term of endearment" . Other times some Black people use the N-word as a derogation or an insult, to refer to other people of any race (example: to describe a person who is ignorant and trifling). One Black person directing the N-word to another Black person, doesn't make the use of the N-word acceptable.

Dr. Laura should not have to apologize for expressing her honest opinion and speaking the truth. I think that this is part of the problem in America as to why we can't move forward on race relations. It's like white people are on edge about political correctness and have to walk on egg shells about the least little things in order to avoid being accused of racism. How are we supposed to overcome our deep-rooted problems with race relations if honest dialogue is constantly discouraged?

A great answer I thought

I really dont know why Dr Laura is aplogizing all over the place she should of stuck to her guns she did not use it in a racist manner

I agree once again. Sniveling to the PC hypocrites when she did nothing wrong makes me sick.

Yes, a good answer.

Further to that....I think it is childish and silly that "nigger" is unacceptable, but "ni&&*r" or "The N word" are ok; the same idea is communicated.

If "nigger" is not to be written, then "n!g$*r" should not be written either. If "nigger" should not be uttered, then "the N word" should not be uttered. They are both the same thing in concept, meaning and intent.

As has been said, it comes down to context and intent.

The "N" word should be a no-no, no matter who uses it, or be accepted.

Good for the goose, good for the gander,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Commonly used word for white skin people, "Honky", is not classed as a no-no, and is used by both black and white people.

Why is there not a hue and cry about the useage,

The whole arguement is "Poor me" by black people.

"Get a life", I say
