Bring in the army, eliminate the 40 armed men. That's the government's job now. If they can use snipers to get rid of red shirts, this should be a piece of cake. and far more reasonable.

So, as I understand it, this was a dispute involving a disgruntled employer. We have it different in the US, where it is disgruntled employees with guns you gotta worry about.

The men in black eviction notice:

AOT cancels Suvarnabhumi parking concession

BANGKOK, 5 October 2010 (NNT) – Airports of Thailand (AOT) has terminated the concession of Parking Management Company Limited. An auction for a new concession will be completed in 3 months.

AOT Chairman Piyaphan Champasut stated that the current company had failed to honor its commitments stated in the contract, particularly in terms of security.

The Chairman said the seizure of the airport car park by a group of armed men last Friday had damaged the image and reputation of the airport.

Incidents like this had happened before, so the AoT decided to cancel the concession with the Parking Management Company.

Mr Piyapan further announced that the cancellation would not affect parking services at the airport, as the AOT would be in charge of collecting parking fees and ensuring security in the parking lots.

The AoT will also speed up the bidding process for a new concessionaire; the whole process is expected to be completed within 90 days.

Parking Management Company won a concession from AOT for managing the car parks at the Airport for five years, starting in April this year until March 2015. Under the agreement, the company is required to pay the AoT a minimum of 16.5 million baht a month or 7.5% of the total revenues collected, whichever is greater. Concession fee of a minimum guarantee of 16.5 million baht per month or 7.5 percent of total monthly revenue.

16.5 million a month? Just for the concession? Anybody any good at figures? How many vehicles do you need a day to earn a decent income? The car park can only accommodate 5000 vehicles.

Now riddle me this: Where else in the world will you have 40 armed men next to an airport that gets peacefully negotiated? And then, of course, what were they armed with?

While this is wonky, it remains much more in the realm of sanitized and sane than say 40 armed men at LAX or Heathrow and what events would follow. Perhaps the Thai's are doing something right?

16,500,000/7.5% = 220,000,000 Baht in revenue per month! Is that right? That's a lot of money.

But the kicker is which ever is greater, so no matter what AoT will get 16.5M per month.

Does anyone know the average spend per car for parking? Is it a flat fee? Someone mentioned that there are 5,000 parking spaces.

Hmm... daily parking 250 baht x 5000 x 30 makes 37.5M baht. Short term (hourly) will probably bring more revenue?! But it sounds like you can make a profit if the lots are relatively full. You don't really have to do anything, hire a couple of employees and man the booths. And pay off the armed men that visit from time to time... :whistling: and of course there's also a pretty high price on "winning" the contract in the first place...

Where they get the 7.5% figure from is a bit of a mystery - no way you're going to make that much money with these parking lots.

Also, a shutdown of the airport as happened when the yellow shirts occupied the place could prove to be catastrophic to their already narrow profit margins.

The most important point is that parking there (1.floor) was actually FREE. I came back from kamen on oct 7 and could ride out without paying 1 satang, saved me Baht 3000. I love Thailand!!!

In any other country this would be an armed insurrection, or a revolution - a gang of 40 armed men take over part of the capital city's main airport? WIll they be arrested and tried? I doubt it.

Another day in Thailand!

Thank God for Thailand. We don't know anything truthful about what is going on there. Maybe it is my military backround. However, parking my car where there are forty armed personal. Why would I want to park anywhere else? Think about it. Only in Thailand could you get that kind of protection at regular price.
