Thai Gps App For Android: Which Better?

Featured Replies

I think it would depend a lot on the phone and Sygic version number. I have just tried the Sygic 11.2.2 that i have on a Samsung tab 1010 wifi. and have to say. No problems at all with colour washout etc. So i guess they have fixed that or it's a problem with your phone/tab.

I also like the easy POI section where you can check hotels etc.. it's almost like a Yellow pages, handy here in Thailand.

But i will look at Locus Pro.

Mine is a Samsung Galaxy S2. I tried Sygic about a half a year ago or so, perhaps they fixed that. Will have to check it again.

this was on the Sygic whats new ..

What's New

What's in this version:

✓Based on user feedback Dynamic Lane Guidance set to appear 500 meters in advance

✓Improved avoid functionality in Route summary/Avoid - motorways, toll roads per country

✓Automatic saving of planned routes for easier restart in case of crash

✓Improved entering of house numbers when navigating to an address

✓Traffic delay duration made more precise

✓Fixed automatic night mode switching based on time zones

✓Most Samsung Galaxy problems fixed, and we are working on the rest

Sygic. We listen.

I've been using Sygic 11.0.1 on a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S variant) for a few weeks. It looks really good so far. Thanks for the tip.

I only had Sygic 11.1 working well on SG2, ver 11.0 kept crashing... no probs with 11.1, haven't tried 11.2 yet as side loaded from an apk file.

Sygic has come a long way, it was a little shit awhile ago but they have fixed a lot of things in the new updates.

Its by far much much better than anything out on the phone.

End Thread.

Just tried Sygic on my old HTC Desire (Oxygen-2.3.2, Android 2.3.7). Eye candy for sure, but I have so far not been able to find anything with the search function. Perhaps the database is in Thai only?

The search interface is also a bit quirky, took me a few attempts to get it working.

nope it's all in English. I thought it was very easy myself.

I gave it a, granted, very quick test, and it was not able to find any of the following: Ikea, Tukcom, Cherries, Centara, Lotus. It did find a few others I tried, so I guess it's a matter of getting all the POI into the database.

Try to search something, then when you have your result, click on the search icon on the center bottom to make a new search. After that the 'Search' button no longer appears so you can't search again. You need to exit back to the main screen, click the search icon there, before you can make a new search.

Details perhaps, as I said, certainly eye candy and you can't argue with the price tag of 20 EUR - including unlimited future map updates unless I misunderstood something.

I found the searches in the Garmain and Sygic to be a pain in the ass sometimes. It does take awhile to find a place with them at times. It would probably work much better in Thai if I could actually read and write Thai. I find the spelling sometimes for streets are not always what I would of thought they would be in both.

Finally managed to get the Free supplied Speednavi map working on my Samsung tab..

I have to say what a pain in the arse way it is to load it up and register..

but after a few emails to them it's activated.......................

now i have to wait until they allow me to upgrade.. another day or 2.

So about 10 days inc weekends....pain.

I hope the newest version (V4) is worth it

Speednavi went straight in the trash when it came with my SG2. Poorly thought out software and dangerous too I would imagine with useless font sizes if being operated from a drivers seat.

Did you upgrade to the latest version or leave it on version 1?

I'm not hoping for much considering how difficult it's been getting this far

Loading the speednavi map can be a pain but they are really good maps using the latest esri map and data. I like the update policy too. One year free and then 900baht gives a year of updates.

I got Speednavi free with my Samsung Galaxy II and had not bothered with it until I heard from harrry above that the app used the ESRI maps. The ESRI maps seem to be way ahead of anything else available and the map in SpeedNavi does seem to be the ESRI map and pretty reliable. And the route guidance seems pretty good, it has spoken directions and gives you this fun little blip when you get the right turn, a little like an arcade game when you run over a reward and get a bonus life or something. The interface for finding POIs sucks though. There are a few not very intuitive ways to find points of interest such as hotels, restaurants, etc (POIs) you might want to navigate too and none of them are very useful.

What is this about app updates? Is there some way to get an update to the free app provided with my phone? Does it improve on the functionality to find POIs?

ok .. about the upgrade..it's as confusing as the initial start up process.....On the website it says that Version 4 is Android, yet we get version 1 on the cd (but they did have to send me a new APK, so not sure if the v1 or v4)it then gets harder to understand because they sent me an email to update to V4, So i went on Q&A to ask how, 1 week later no answer from the Thai side. So i emailed Korea and got told version 1 is the only version for Android...... confusing..... still waiting for an answer from Thai customer service.

And so took advantage of the Sygic Christmas promo... Thailand for Euro 11.99. (523b) unlimited updates using tom tom maps.

Still checking both out, not sure which i like best or which is the most accurate yet.

I'm using Locus. Really like it. Started with the free version, it so impressed me, I actually forked out cash for the full version. Make sure you download the add ons so you can use Google maps both on and offline. Installing vector maps for offline use is easy as well. Highly recommended.

Anyone knows a good one for android tablet? Sygic does not work on mine.

I have an Ibex (disco 10 firmware)

Since I upgraded to Android 4.0 (ICS) it seems like my version of Google Maps (v. 6.1.1) has Navigation enabled for Thailand, without the need to hack it as before. After opening Google Maps, choosing Directions, and starting.ending point, then click on the "Arrowhead", representing Navigation, the Navigation app. starts identified as "beta". It looks like you can still pre-cache limited map areas for off-line use. I'll check a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 later and follow up.

I travelled last year from Chiang Mai to ko Samui with a Honda Shadow 200 CC and a Galaxy Tab tablet (Android) with Sygic. I uses it only by audio connexion. Works OK all the way except in Bangkok where the program wanted me tu use the highway. Which is forbidden in Bangkok ! Because there was nobody at the entry when I reached the exit the gate man became crazy and ordered me to go back toward the wrong side ! I had to drive back 5 km, with cars driving in front of me. When I programmed Sygic not to use the highway he, too, became crazy. I had a very bad moment in Bangkok, at noon, a Saturday looking for a way to the south. Finally I asked a taxi to show me the way (a useful trick when lost in a big city) and, for 400 baht, I escaped from hell. I did'nt like Bangkok ; now I hate this city. With a motorbike it's a mess, without it's a nightmare to move somewhere.

Morality : with a motorbike avoid absolutely Bangkok. Sygic is a good Gps program for Thailand, except in Bangkok. Perhaps the last version is better but I don't want to try again. You can download it directly on their eponymous website. I paid 18 Euro. Which is correct for this program.

I bought the "Sygic Mobile Maps for iPhone - Southeast Asia" for my Iphone 4. Absolutely frigging useless unless you want to use it for driving around the Block. trying to use it for Navigation Purpose and Distances of more that 35km gives you an Error message that the Points are too far from each other to be navigated.

Alexander Graham Bell is turning over in his grave at the indignity of it all. If you want a GPS then purchase a proper one.

Latitude: 46.11275, Longitude: -60.71590

Although not sure what Alexander Graham Bell has to do with mobile phones or "proper" GPS devices?

I guess he might have used one of those early "proper" GPS devices?

i have used nokia maps for years and no problems - free too

but now their symbian o/s is dying a slow death and new models are windows 8

i shall switch to android soon and so the info here is much appreciated

I think you have only two viable options. By far the best option is to buy a dedicated GPS with the ESRI TSM map installed on it. The second is to buy a new Nokia with the Nokia maps. Nokia maps were designed for a Nokia phone.

When you are busy driving a vehicle, you have no time to be fiddling with a smart phone. Smart phones may be handy when you are on foot but as far as I am concerned they are not suitable to use when driving.

You can buy a decent GPS with the latest map already installed for less than 4,000 baht. You can turn it on and use it straight out of the box. Maybe in the near future someone will adapt the ESRI TSM for Android, but it is not available yet.

The solution is not to avoid driving a bike in Bangkok but getting a proper Garmin GPS with Thailand Street Map which handles highway avoidance perfectly and knows every tiny soi :)

I haven't used it but wasn't Google Maps for android supposed to fill this requirement? I heard it was didn't consume ISP time and offered navigation turn by turn?

Try Route66 on Google Play. So far, no problems yet since I'm on the passenger side of the car.

Little late responding. but perhaps some poor souls can be saved some inconvenience. I love my 3900 baht Garmin Nuvi40, but make sure you have them change the language to English before you leave the store. Out of the box, they seem to come with Thai language only. Took the nice lady about 10 minutes to swap languages while I browsed the rest of the store.
