Macro Lens For Nikon D90

Featured Replies

I am planning to buy a Macro lens for my Nikon D90 - mainly to be used in close-up Nature photography.

Can anyone suggest a good Lens?

Many thanks for any recommendations.

Patrick

The Nikor 60mm for tabletop is good or longer focal length for bugs and other creatures.

I bought the Zeiss 100 f2 manual focus at FotoFile. Nice

Generally, the 105mm Nikor micro gets the best reviews. I have been using one (with the D90) but still fairly new at it; so far, really happy.

It is a heavy lens and sometimes focus hunts a bit but easily corrected by instant manual focus override. DOF, as with any makro work is always a challenge but images are sharp.

I can second that , the 105mm is a stunning lens and won me 1st place on my first use of it at a local club ( this was a long time ago and was used on my F4 Nikon )

I use Canon now so I am not too sure of the crop factor , but I think it would be 1.6 so the 105 would be much longer on your camera eg ... 105 x 1.6 = 168 , so better for spooky wild life . ( sorry if I am telling you what you allready know).

.

Hmmm, I have always found the Nik 105 to be a very difficult lens to use for nature macro. Its DOF is so small (about 3 mm at 1:1 or 12 inches if I recall) that it can be a very frustrating lens to use, unless you like to shoot shallow DOF.

I pers use a creaking old Nikon 200 but have been considering a long (150+) third party offering like a tamron or a sigma.

do you mean 60 2.8 chaimai? :D

Many thanks for all the replies.

I played with the Nikkor 105 at a Dealership yesterday and have been looking at the results carefully - I plan to buy that lens over the weekend.

Thanks again.

Forgot to add also; this lens can be used on FX (full frame) format too, apparently, in case you want to upgrade the camera later. (see review by Ken Rockwell). Most lenses for DX cameras can not.

No, I don't own shares!!:D

Crop is 1.5 for the Nikon, therefore 105 x 1.5 = 157.5mm

You will be happy with that lense Patrick, we've had it for about 18 months & its very sharp, can in right situation be used for a portrait lense.

I would be interested to know after you buy the lense where it was made. Our 105 was made in Japan but I was later told that this lense is now made in China. jap.gif
