900,000 Speed Pills Seized at Border in Chiang Rai

Border patrol soldiers and Chiang Rai police confiscated 150-million baht worth of methamphetamine pills and 'ice' bars as they were being smuggled into Thailand across the Sai River in Mae Sai District.

Chiang Rai Police and soldiers of the Pha Muang border security force seized over 900,000 methamphetamine pills and 25 kilograms of 'ice,' valued at a total of 150-million baht at the border with Myanmar in Mae Sai District.

The authorities acted on a tip-off of a massive smuggling of drugs from Myanmar across the Sai River in the district. They staged the raid last night.

Smugglers were transporting drugs when they caught sight of officers and fled the area, leaving all of their cargo behind.

Thai authorities are contacting Myanmar's narcotics suppression agency to find out which drug smuggling ring the confiscated drugs belong to.

They suspected that the drugs were manufactured by a factory north of Myanmar's Shan State.

There is so far no evidence suggesting that the drugs are linked to the upcoming election.
