Nope...like I said, Astana is much closer geographically than Jo'Burg, Windhoek, Perth or indeed Rio Grande.

Nope, but Old Croc is in the right country :o

I heard this is where Stalin suggested for the new Jewish state to be created :D

If I can get in there before Croc does

Alamaty

:o

Unless you're thinking of the Soviet Union, Almaty and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy are in different countries these days :o

I didn't think it was right. I just wanted a chance to throw Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy in to a post! :o

Birobidzhan (or Khabarovsk)

I wondered about that one. I saw pics of that town, but I didn'y think it looked similar enough.

Florin, do you have another clue?

It fits the clue about Stalin and the Jewish state.

Oops, then my hearsay must have been wrong :o

It's not Khabarovsk (or Yalta), Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy is still the closest one so far...it's actually quite close indeed :D

No, getting far away again...here's another clue (this time historical fact :o ): this city was an important transit center for prisoners being sent to labor camps and has only one single road connecting it to the nearest major city, which is 1700km away.

Is it Yakutsk?

Is the road the Road of Bones?

That's the road! But the city is the one on the opposite end!

We have a winner :o

Bet you learnt some fun new facts while looking for this one, eh? :D

The bloody answer was staring me in the face for the last day - I had the Ewan Macgregor series - "long way round" behind my computer. There is a route listing of all the place they went to on the back cover...

I'll post a new one shortly!

Bratsk? (whoops. Refresh thread before posting! )

Actually, I'm from Aberdeen. I have been trying out a couple of Scottish themes for TV.

I got a program to make my own avatars - it's well handy.

Sorry that it's on the small side - I couldn't get the original large pic that I wanted!

And there seems to be a can of special brew here too! - I can't see it to remove!

Me too.

Manali - Himachal Pradesh

No and No.

Let me tell you a little bit about this town.

I was in India for 4 months and 1 month was spent here - I never saw one beggar. There are a lot of Scottish connections here.
