OK I thought Japan was East, Kuming is North... so that leaves either south...ish or west..ish! Within 5 hours of Bangkok flight time..

I'll try Calcutta. I've checked towns in India, Bhutan, Nepal Bangladesh, Tibet (China) and various .. stans, but cant find that much colour anywhere.

Calcutta had a few coloured buildings.

The only colour I remember from Calcutta is grey.
