Security at airports across the world is to be beefed up because terrorists may be using bombs surgically implanted inside their bodies to try to blow up planes, officials have warned.

Until now, terrorists have attacked airlines, trains, buses and shopping centres by hiding bombs in bags, shoes or underwear to avoid detection.

But in a bid to foil airport scanners, the militants may have taken the most drastic measures, cutting themselves open and planting bombs within their bodies, leaked U.S. intelligence suggests.

Authorities have already been on high alert since the death of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in May, ramping up security at airports, government buildings and other facilities in case of a retaliatory strike.

Any explosion on a plane is a huge risk, but can enough explosives be hidden in a living person to easily blow a hole in an aircraft? Where would a bomber have to sit to cause maximum damage?

So how will scanners distinguish between a replacement hip, surgically implanted, and an explosive device that looks like a replacement hip, surgically implanted?

Scott, enough explosive can be contained in a very small volume to affect an aircraft at maximum altitude. Although simple home-made explosives may only have a 3x ratio, there are easily available commercial explosives up to 16x. And even if it didn't destroy the plane, imagine what a body-full of guts flying around the cabin would do.

I would suggest that seats just behind the wing root would be best - crack the last third of the plane off. But that's coach, so maybe no one would notice.

This surgically implanted bomb story is months old - if not from last year. The latest I heard was that al Qaeda told their boys in the UK to act gay in order to be less suspicious. So now they also need to screen people for explosive sex toys inserted in their bum. Is that absurd?

1) enough modern compound could easily be put in a pen & probably pass through undetected.

2) There is virtually no scanning of arriving passengers from foreign lands. If one wanted to

they could easily board from many countries that have limited scanning & achieve results either on a plane

or in the arrival port claiming many more than there are on any plane. Ever watch scanning of suitcases?

Minimal at best as they try to load thousands of cases in crowded airports. Again modern compounds need not be bulky

3) If there truly was a threat that wanted to achieve a goal of destruction then it is for the most part indefensible.

Look at any shipping port in the USA for example. Look at how many shipping containers arrive daily. It is virtually impossible to

scan thousands of containers daily.

Imagine how large a device could be put into a shipping container.
