The Might Of China.

Times have changed. It's starting to look like the USA and Vietnam as allies against China.

Beijing has named the South China Sea one of its "core interests," meaning it could potentially go to war to protect it. Smaller Asian nations were already wary of China's growing military prowess, but the launch of its first carrier is yet another message about its increasing strength.

"We hope that China, as a major power, will contribute positively and responsively to maintain peace and stability in the region and in the world," Vietnam Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Nguyen Phuong Nga said last week in response to a question about China's new carrier.

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, which the U.S. has said it has a national interest in making sure freedom of navigation continues in an area home to vital shipping lanes.

China would seem to at least have some basis for their claim.......but the US is extending their borders a bit far.

Poor, poor China.

No respect. And after all they've contributed and influence extended to the world and history.

Can you list a few of these contributions from the past 100 years?

I lived briefly in China and liked it. I had zero problems. Even the guy assigned to follow me around took me out drinking.

You're not an Euro-apologists, are you?

As they're difficult to find.:rolleyes::whistling::rolleyes::whistling:

You sure have a roundabout way of saying "No, I can't list them because there aren't any"

Vietnam and The Philippines wouldn't be able to claim one square metre of the SCS if not for the US.

Residue of former colonial occupation, is all.

USA. Benign and exceptional to the core.

VN and PI are US national interests? They're a looooooooong way off the American coast....even further than Hawaii.

FYI - Hawaii IS the American coast. So is Guam ("Where America's Day Begins") and Guam is closer to Manila than Beijing. The distance between Guam (USA) is almost identical to the distance between Wellington and Melbourne (Aus, not Florida). So very close.

Ahhhh...I see. Thanks for that. So, because Guam is closer to Manila than Beijing, the Phillipines are America's.

Actually, the US embassy in Manila IS American territory too, just like Guam, and is even closer!!!! So that makes America's claim inarguable.

I don't follow your logic, but never mind.

I don't think the US is claiming the South China Sea. I think its interest is to continue to navigate it as all other maritime nations should be allowed to do as well. Territorial waters only extend 12 miles for all countries though Economic zones can extend 200 miles. The US's interests are the same as most other nations, that being a more equitible division of territorial rights should lead to greater region wide prosperity and trade opportunities.

You're the one who brought it up in the first place. Not my fault you didn't know (forgot?) that Hawaii is a US state. :)

ahhh.... to parry your flawed thrust, I obviously know about Hawaii as I did mention it.....it's back to that "contiguous" aspect again....Did you forget?

I always think of a country as the main block of land it occupies, not the "technical" territories it has gained around the globe. I don't think France actually extends to Mururoa, New Zealand to parts of Antarctica, or Canada/Russia/whoever to the North Pole.

Next you'll be telling me that since Neil Armstrong planted the flag on the moon, America is now the closest to the rest of the universe, and thus has dibs.

We do. Anyone else is free to try to plant their own flag if they think otherwise.

Concerning Hawaii, based on the other examples you just gave it's obvious you don't have a good grasp of its status as a US STATE. Best to leave it there before this China thread gets further derailed. You can continue though if you want.

Back to China...

Evergreen Solar, a "green" company in the USA which received stimulus money, has gone bankrupt. They had received $58 million in aid, and last year moved part of their production to China and now they are shutting down in the US while the China venture will continue to operate. China doesn't have to invade us, we are moving everything over their and paying the costs ourselves. T
