Just returned from a trip to Thailand. MrsBoj and DaughterBoJ had a few weeks in the boonies over the summer holidays but I only managed to squeeze in a few days. So thought I would post some updated random piccies.

Looking across the front of the house, we have had a small retaining wall built which will have steps down to the lower level. At the far side we will have another one similar built and in-fill with soil.

Where there isn't a concrete beam in the middle of the wall is where the steps will go.

This is the lower level, where as you can see the mrs has something in mind as she has decided to fell about 6 or 7 coconut trees!!

Looking down the side of the house you can see the Thai kitchen and the start of a small granny bungalow for FiL.

This is inside the Thai kitchen. Not looking too bad I think.

The pump and tank room at the back is now finished.

Whilst I was there I wanted to get the railings done at the front, so got the BiL to drop off a job he was doing elsewhere.

Once BiL no1 had finished, BiL no2 did the painting.

I'm quite happy with the outcome. I didn't want anything too elaborate or flashy.

That has come out really nice, I'm impressed :)

So how much over the budget did you go? Is it now an over-budget bungalow in the boonies? :)

Cheers Crossy.

As you know, there never really was a budget but I used the word budget to highlight that it was never going to be a first class standard build i.e. cavity walls, slate roof etc but I did spend more than I really needed to on finishing especially tiles on the floor and bathroom. However, if you want to pin me down to a budget, it was 5m baht and I've come well under laugh.png

I never counted every baht but I suppose it's around 1.2m baht including the FiL's granny bungalow at the side. That is obviously not including the land as the mrs already owned it from years ago. Even since we started building I have seen a huge increase in the cost of building materials but still cheap as chips really.

well done Mr BoJ! thumbsup.gif

Cheers Naam. I still have yet to incorporate some of your tips for keeping the temperature inside down a bit i.e. extractor fans in the roof space.

Just got back from the boonies after having 5 days up there, so thought I'd do a couple of updates. The BiL's have just finished a big build elsewhere and so have a week before starting their next job so they have resumed work on the FiL's granny flat. Just as we were leaving the concrete truck turned up so that has now all gone down. The electrics are now in and they have started rendering inside and out,

Here are a few of the inside. The last time I was here I bought the skirting boards (Shera) and they fitted them. So I did some decorating this time hanging some wall paper and painting the skirtings, door farmes and doors. Also bought a couple of cheap sofas (7,000 Baht ea from Homepro) some curtains and a 51" TV. Starting to look a bit more homely now I think.

A few more piccies have come through. The front door and back door have now been fitted. This is one of two things that I am not happy about, or at least not convinced about. Albeit I think they look quite good. I bought these when I was there last month and didn't want the type with intricate carvings on.

They have put both doors on, with them swinging outwards. They told me this earlier when they were fitting the frames and the Mrs wanted them this way. I'll also check the hinges to make sure the pins can't be popped out from the outside. Don't know if it's just me but it feels strange having them open like that. Anyone else have them that way?

Front door and frame which both need cleaning up and staining/varnishing. Any ideas what I would be best using? Don't want them looking too glossy.

Back door. Opens into the Thai kitchen.

Yup, we have double doors at the front and they open outwards, come to think of it so do the 2 back doors. I had to fit some extra handles on the inside at the top of the door to get extra pulling power to close them properly in the rainy season when they swell, can't trim too much off obviously because they shrink in the heat. Sometimes when we got really hard wind and rain it could come in under the bottom of the door, I got around this by making a wood lip, just a strip of wood about one and a half inches wide ftted to the bottom of the door and extending down so there is no gap. Of course this wouldn't have been possible if the doors opened inwards.

Yes you can buy weather seals to fit to your doors Home Pro and others carry them.
