The Klong Mudong canal, where the boys drowned, opens into a mangrove forest before emptying into Phang Nga Bay.

PHUKET: Two young boys drowned late yesterday while playing in an estuary near a popular tourist area on Phuket’s east coast.

The boys – Pinitchnan Na Roied, 5, and Wannawut Thanakarn, 7 – were last seen playing in the Klong Mudong canal, a large tidal estuary that flows into mangroves along the Phang Nga Bay coast.

Kusoldham Rescue Foundation staff told the Phuket Gazette, “We received a report at 4:38pm from a local resident there that someone had drowned in Klong Mudong, near the Chai Yo Seafood restaurant.

“Witnesses said they saw three boys playing in the water in that area at about 1pm. A fisherman passing by told them to get out of the water because that area is dangerous.

“But after warning the boys he just went about his business,” he said.

A local resident later saw the body of Pinitchnan floating in the water. He pulled the body out of the water and onto a nearby bridge.

“After realizing who it was he rushed to the homes of the other two boys to check if they were safe. The one boy who was home said he left the creek immediately after being warned by the fisherman. The other two boys stayed to play,” said the rescue worker.

Concerned about Wannawut, who was still missing, local residents checked his friends’ homes before heading back to the bridge to search for him.

“Then one of the villagers saw something that looked like hair floating in the water. It was Wannawut. They couldn’t get his body out of the water, so they called us,” the rescue worker said.

“The bodies of the two boys are now at Vachira Phuket Hospital,” he added.

Klong Mudong has recently gained popularity among local residents and tourists as a haven away from the busy beach areas such as Patong, Kata and Karon on Phuket's west coast.

The natural scenery has inspired many artists and been the focus of local photography competitions.

In the west it is very possible these boys parents would be brought up on negligence charges. Here? The parents don't even warrant a mention in the article. Hell, in America you must now have a locking fence around your backyard pool. I'm not saying Thailand needs to be a nanny state, but the general lack of concern Thai's often exhibit towards safety of their children sickens me. Another great example..parents riding motorbikes with helmets while kids and toddlers go without. :annoyed:

I suppose that the 'happy-go-lucky' nature of Thai people is one of the factors that attracts us westerners. But the other side of that leads to other issues such as you mention. I often discuss this with my Thai wife and her attitude of 'why worry, it's not happened yet' makes me shake my head in amazement/alarm.

The parents only wear those helmets because there is a risk of a fine where they're riding.

I'm very glad though there is no risk a negligence charge in cases like this, sad enough as it is, and the 'we have to blame somebody for what is happening' mentality of the USA is way, way over the top IMO.

If that mentality really sickens you you are in the wrong country IMO, because it is that same mentality that makes living here very relaxed and easy going. I think LiK just wrote this down very well.

So you are implying this story doesn't sicken you? Really? Dead children.... your right, nothing to be bothered by there. More dead children please. Steve wants to feel "relaxed".

The only thing worse than negligent parents are negligent parent apologists.

A banal response steve, even by your standards.

Don't twist my words, especially with something like this. I said nothing like that nor implied

anything like that. The sneers I don't find necessary, so will refrain from commenting on those.
