Chiang Mai Doctors And Medical Specialists

Great list that will help many folks.

One thing you might want to consider adding "Sports Injury"

I see Dr Chanakarn is already listed, he operated on my busted knee and is a sports injury specialist.

He has been the top doc for the Thailand SEA Games team for 10 years. Trained in Chicago.

I also endorse Dr Preecha from your list for hand / wrist injuries. 10 years ago he pinned my wrist in 5 places after a MX accident. It's still perfect today.

Hi CM just made a few changes to HCMC, hope you dont mind.

Since I'm maintaining a master list on my PC and making changes to it based on individual recommendations, it is that list that will be reposted every time. Therefore, if individual posters make changes to the list they will be lost whenever I repost the list, the alternative to this method is a free for all where anyone makes changes whenever they want. Sooo, if you have changes or additions that you want to see made to the list, please let me know and I'll do my best to incorporate them.

Finally, it seemed sensible to limit the amount of date we supply about each doctor and hospital/clinic otherwise the task will get out of hand and never get finished. Also, I think it's important to supply the same data for all doctors and not be seen to favour one over another by adding additional information to some and not to others. Doctors who work out of a hospital location require nothing more than their specialty, name and the telephone number of the hospital; doctors who only only work out of clinics require slightly more information such as opening hours and location of the clinic - hospitals are open twenty four hours and their location is mostly known by everyone. I think it's important to remember that the objective in this exersise is to identify enough information about medical specialists to allow a would be patient to make contact, we are NOT trying to construct the ultimate medical guide to Chiang Mai, at least I'm not. Hope that all makes sense and that most of you agree.

Thanks for that, we may have to make a decision about how many dentists we should include in this list since almost everyone has their personal favorite, there are sheds loads of them in CM and the turn over rate is quite high I suspect. I'll leave it to the powers that be to decide what they want to do with this topic, in the event that the one you recommended doesn't make the list, please don't take it personally and I think you can see the issue from a "list" perspective

Also, for the benefit of all: if we include web sites for one party we need to do it for all otherwise it appears as though one group is favored over another. Frankly I don't have the bandwidth to gather that data although I'm perfectly happy if the powers that be want to undertake the task..

We have been disappointed by Dr. SIRI.

Daughter-in-law suffers from Psoriasis. She got a lot of pills from him, no effect. I learnt by Google how difficult it is to cure this awful disease or to reduce the symptoms at least.

But healso didn't recognize that the pain in her foot stemmed from her psoriasis. 10% of psoriasis patients suffer from bone or joint pain, too. A young Dr. in Mae Hong Son found the reason of her foot pain. It's a pity, he is now to the US.

Just as a side note, if anyone wants to know the price of Dr Rachada cataract surgery.

35-40,000 for normal lens, appx 70,000 for multifocal (saw her today)

Oh you do do ya, well I think you should buy the beers for the rest of the month but I'm sure that's not going to happen either :D

I'm chatting with the mods about updates and maintenance etc so we'll let them decide what's the best overall.

Nobody have mentioned McCormick Hospital, is it that bad?

They've done it up nice.

And they have an MRI scanner.

Don't know anything about the doctors there.

Posted

I was wondering the same thing, part of the answer might be that McCormick is a Christian Hospital, East side of the river vs West side stuff perhaps - I don't think for one minute that McCormick is bad in any way but I'm also surprised that no doctors from there have been mentioned.

Chill, (some) people!!!

This has existed as a remarkable thread in that whingers have been almost entirely absent. No practitioner gets it right every time, but after reading this site for many years, there does seem to be a consensus about many practitioners. At the same time, it does not mean that there are not other very competent physicians and surgeons who have not been mentioned. There are.

Thai Visa is not and will never be an S&P rating service (for whatever S&P is worth!), but I suggest slowing down before things get out of hand, a possible failing which seems imminent on such a site.

A valuable service is being done. Let it be!

Nobody have mentioned McCormick Hospital, is it that bad?

No, it isn't bad. I have a very professional friend who has practiced there for many years, but to go in the direction suggested by your post is not, in my view, helpful.

I was wondering the same thing, part of the answer might be that McCormick is a Christian Hospital, East side of the river vs West side stuff perhaps - I don't think for one minute that McCormick is bad in any way but I'm also surprised that no doctors from there have been mentioned.

We have had good experience at McCormick with the Pediatrics clinic and the hospital. The one time we questioned the treatment of our child, they had a Senior Professor of Pediatrics from CMU there in about 2 hours time for a 2nd opinion (at their expense) and we were impressed with that. He said the treatment was not aggressive enough and made some changes in medication and added respiratory therapy. But he said overall they were doing a good job.

The doctors there do practice at other hospitals. I inquired as to one doctors clinic schedule and surprisingly they gave me a list of the 3 hospitals he practiced at and the schedule of his clinics at all 3 hospitals which included Lanna, Ram, and McCormick.

There is probably no more nervous group on the planet than transported farang in Chiang Mai. Considering their average age (as represented on this thread), care to make a guess? And guess where they came from, and what do you suppose their level of general level of expectation is? That isn't remarkable, but what is remarkable is how fortunate they have been to end up in a community with a truly remarkably good general level of health care. Some good judgment! But perhaps people bring entirely too much baggage.

The list of medical practitioners attempted on this thread is not the list of lists, but it will help people get started. There are many good hospitals and a lot of qualified practitioners in Chiang Mai. Is too much expected by nervous new arrivals? Perhaps, for some people, the same kind of problem existed "back home." Would it be wiser not to bring such worries here? Why worry! If you can't handle it without feeling you have to change it, chalk up the experience to a lovely sojourn in an "exotic" place and go home to tell your grandchildren about it.

P.S. And take McDonalds, Burger King Stuckeys, Tesco, Kentucky Fried and pizza whatever back with you. Please!

All telephone numbers are for main hospital switchboards, the telephone numbers of doctors own private clinics are not shown unless that is their only place of work.

Sripat is the private wing of the 2,300 bed Mahraj Hospital, a large tertiary government teaching hospital affiliated with Chiang Mai University (CMU). All medical specialities are represented and the hospital is fully equipped to a high standard, including an excellent trauma center. At Sripat (also known as "Suan Doc" or the "Special Medical Services Center") it is possible to see .many of the most senior physicians affiliated with the CMU Medical School in a private capacity. No other hospital in the area offers the same range of expertise, and it is quite affordable. However, some inconveniences are to be expected in terms of long waits and language barriers. While most of the doctors speak English, few of the administrative or nursing staff do. In this as in many government hospitals, the quality of care is much higher than the hospital's general appearance and lack of amenities might suggest.

Ramkamheng ("Ram") Hospital is a private for-profit institution which is more convenient in terms of language and waiting time, but also more expensive and offering a more limited range of medical specialties. In some cases physicians at CMU also have hours at RAM.

Another well known private hospital in the Chiang Mai area catering to the expatriate community is McCormick Hospital. Although private, it is non-profit, with rates that fall between those of a government hospital and a for-profit private such as Ram.

Well done!

I appreciate the added general information about the hospitals, especially the note about trauma care at Suan Doc. Time and distance are always factors, but for really serious concerns, that trauma center is probably the best staffed. A case can also be made that the mobile cardiac unit that Ram has might provide more immediate mobile care, but I have not been able to compare what is offered by Ram compared to Suan Doc ambulance services.

I don't know about the ambulance services at Suan Dork but certainly the ER or Trauma Center is pretty huge and they must do a roaring trade since there's some fifty gurneys and wheel chairs lined up to the side waiting - there's also a helipad nearby which seems in almost constant use by an air ambulance. I made a mental note to my self as I was viewing it all that if I was ever going to get sick or get in an accident I should try and make sure it happens nearby!

I got a bit carried away in trying to write up an accompanying background description of the health care system in Chiang mai, it ran to three and half pages of A4 and provided a start to finish education for newbie ex-pats on the workings of the medical system in Chiang Mai and by default, the system overall in Thailand. I sent it to Sheryl to proof read and she came back with a slap around the head and the words, "three and a half pages, get real Chiang Mai" - the narrative at the end of the list is our, er, um , ahem, compromise (and is much more appropriate). :)

The air ambulance frequently transports patients from as far away as Myanmar and Laos. Patients who need neurosurgery are often air-lifted there to be operated on in the Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital which is right next to the Suan Dok campus. It has an excellent reputation and is the best in the region.
