My wife and I would like to drive our truck to Savannhket, but don't know if we should park it on the Thai side (if so, where and how much does it cost?) or take it with us. We are still making payments on the truck which is under her father's name, so I don't know if that would cause boarder crossing issues.

Also, should we reserve a hotel room online or just get a room when we get there?

Any advice or insight on this would be appreciated.

Leave the truck in Thailand, there should be parking available near the border crossing, I'm not sure where, someone will keep an eye on it for a few Bhat. Get your hotel when you get there. We pay 100 Bhat a night to park in Nong Khai with free tuk tuk to border 3 minutes away.

There is parking area (left side) at the bridge on the Thai side.

I stayed over night in Laos, with my car still in Thailand.

It was ok when i got back. Didn't see any special guards for the car park though.

There is another post on TV about taking a car into Laos, you should read that.

As for hotels: there are plenty of hotels and guesthouses around, no real need to book.

Just ask the tuk tuk drivers.

If you don't drive your own car over the bridge, there is only a busservice over the bridge, Thai-Lao Int'l bus, at 50 baht pp.

In order to take your car into Laos you need the vehicle registration. If you are still paying for the car then you wont have it. So taking your car over the border is a no no.

There is secure parking at Mukdahan bus station.

From the bus station you can get on the International bus that will take you over the bridge, stopping twice for Thai immigration and then for Laos Immigration. It will then take you to Savannakhet bus station.

At the bus station there will be many tuk tuks that know where the Consulate is, if that is where you are going. I knw most people talk about the casino hotel over there but if you would like something a little quieter then the Neema guest hose is very good.
