Legitimate Animal Shelter?

Featured Replies

Has anyone heard of "SCAD Bangkok" animal rescue? are they a legitimate rescue center?

Wife and I are 1000% animal lovers and we would like to do our share to help dogs and cats in Thailand by donating. The only problem is that we are living in Michigan at the moment so cannot visit these rescue center ourselves. We are hoping that there are people on Thaivisa that are living in Thailand right now that have been to these facilities to vouch for them until we can make the visit.

Actually, we are interested not only in SCAD , but also in other rescue centers that you think its legitimate anywhere in Thailand that may need some help. We don't have tons but we can spare some to help animal in need.

Thank you for your input.

SCAD is 100% legitimate and does a really good job.

They recently moved to outside Bangkok so they would have more space for the cats and dogs and more capacity to help. Of course, they're always short of money - and the problem of street dogs in Thailand is immense. They also do a pretty good job of vetting would be owners to make sure that they are suitable.

I would have no hesitation in recommending them as a good place to donate to.

I adopted a cat from SCAD. The application process was very extensive for the adoption. I am of the opinion that they are picky about the animals they rescue. I found a stray kitten after my adoption of a cat from them and called SCAD and they were not interested in the kitten and not willing to explain why or other alternatives for the kitten. I kept the kitten myself. They do seem to take good care of the animals that they are willing to rescue.

I think the reality is that there are so many stray cats and dogs in Bangkok that one organisation has no chance to help them all. As I understand it, SCAD will, if possible, treat sick animals, then return them to the street. Only those animals which can't be returned to the street because of injury or weakness, or are particularly adoptable (i.e. good natured) are kept for possible adoption. A stray kitten, sadly, doesn't really meet these criteria.

I have heard only good things about SCAD

There is also one in Puket called Soi dog Foundation that you might want to check out.

Their website claims

De-sexing (Sterilization) has

been proven to be the most effective

way to help the animals. Soi Dog has has reached a milestone of over 36,000 dogs and cats sterilized! Totaling 36,341 dogs and cats as of January 2012.

Watch this movie about them at this youtube link. truly it will bring a tear to your eye.

(i posted the incorrect link a few months back. This is the correct one).

Thank you everyone for giving your advice. It is awfully difficult to know for sure which organization are legitimate from across the ocean. The next time we are in Thailand we definitively will be visiting all these places ourselves

Your opinion matters. We have read about Scad & Soi dogs and will be contacting them to donate.

If anyone know of anymore please let me know. My in-laws are living in SuratThani and take care of about 7 dogs and 10 cats on their own, so a place near to them would be great. Thank you again.

note: seen the soidogs video and indeed brought tears to our eyes. Shame people there just don't care enough.

we are on koh samui and would be happy if you came visit one day :)
