I am looking for a reliable and good glasses shop to fill my prescription glasses preferably near MBK. I have unique lenses with very strong astigmatism and also looking for hi-index thin lenses, and possibly photo gray lenses

Any referral is appreciated

Not really near MBK, but the stretch of Petchabury Rd from Pantip Plaza to Ratchthewi has many optical shops and they are very competitive. They are mostly on the side opposite Pantip.

I am very happy with the glasses I got at a shop located at #408/16-17 Petchabury; sorry, the name of the shop on my glasses case is in Thai. They speak English and I was impressed with the thoroughness of the in-shop optician. Their prices were negotiable.

Telephone is 02 208 9855

I also bought my glasses on a side street of Petchburi, but going from Pratunam market towards the Express Way. Many good opticians in that area.

On a,hopefully,related subject.

What does one do with 'redundant' spectacles ?

Is there somewhere in Pattaya where one can drop them off ?

are we talkin' about the part of Petchburi Rd between Wireless Rd and Pantip?...I need to get some new specs too, with a good examination...I'm diabetic and haven't had one in 2 years...the present specs seem to be OK but the frames are gettin' old...

May I suggest keeping your glasses and dropping a font size or two ?.... giggle.gif

Yes, but on the opposite side of Petchburi, not were Wireless is. In Soi 31 or 33, I think.

the last time I had an examination it was with a guy with magnification slides and a chart on the wall...it seemed to work OK. is this what I can expect with the Petchburi Rd opticians? earlier in a hospital in Abu Dhabi they did the chemical dilation treatment and the result was a mess...the specs that resulted didn't work...

Sorry for the tardy response. No, not the Wireless end, rather the Ratchthewi end near the BTS station then going on Petchabury towards Pantip on the opposite side.

The examination was done using traditional equipment, no high tech stuff. Interestingly, I'd had another pair made at an optical shop near Klong Tan that did have hi-tech testing gear. The resulting glasses were way off and nearly unusable.

and what can we say regarding frames?...the ones that I have from a filipino shop in Jeddah have lasted over 2 years!...the last ones that I got in Thailand (from a Charoen outlet) lasted less than 6 months (with OK lenses) with a catastrophic failure...they just disintegrated at work one day...

looks like the opticians offa Petchburi Road have got good quality stuff from the comments on this thread...who has the best range of hard wearing frames?

(I like the Woody Allen frames with plastic bi-focals so as to look benign but to actually say: 'don't mess with me, you fool...')

it's nice to drop the specs on the ground sometimes and not have them later fall apart...the weak hinges that corrode and etc...

That is done to check your retina; not for eyesight testing. The last time I had that done at same time as vision test my resulting prescription was also a total mess (in US).

Wife and I ordered from http://www.zennioptical.com/ last year not expecting much but so far have been very happy with them and at $40 for bifocal and $100 for thin progressive can't complain about the price.

My prescription is not as complicated as yours but maybe this is still helpful. I absolutely love my glasses I got them from Falcon Optical at Siam Square One (about 10 minutes walk from MBK). They cost 1490 baht all in including fitting, frames, high index lenses (my prescription is -4.75, -5.25), anti reflective, cloth and case. I brought my prescription from the States and they made the glasses in the shop in an hour. The optician spoke excellent English and everyone is very professional. The frames I picked are the cheapest but they are designed in Korea and gorgeous. I look so good in them and are very comfortable. They also have designer frames too. They accept visa and MasterCard and some other forms of payment I forgot which (not Amex though). They are on Level 1 and definitely consult the mall map since they are in a corner and a little bit hidden.
