I spend 6 months out of the year in Chiag Saen (Yonok) not quite Khong. I love the area, small village communities rice fields, fish and chicken. Also close enough to Mae Chan and Chiang Rais so you do not feel too isolated

We live roughly midway between Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong. It is going to be a long drive for you to get into town from there. In the beginning that may not seem like an issue but it could become more important over time.

The boomtown atmosphere can be seductive but it lures speculators and a sometimes unscrupulous element of society. One thing is certain, Chiang Khong will go through some major changes over the next several years. Some will see that as a good thing while others will lament what is lost with the passage of time and crushed beneath the heavy boot of progress.

I believe there are a few posters living out that way but you will no doubt find many more who do not frequent these hallowed pages. Good luck with your move and your new life in Chiang Khong.

WilliamCave,

Yes, welcome to Chiang Khong. There are indeed a handful of posters living here in Chiang Khong. Although, not all the posters are here at the same time.

As to the city. Well, ... small, quiet, and a great view of the Mekong. The Thai people are friendly. Rice farmers, mostly. And, a population of Hmong in the nearby hills. And, a flow of tourists crossing daily to/from Laos.

Post, or PM, any questions you have.

I bought 2rai of teak bush and love the area looking to retire there I do have my home in bkk still that I will not sell.

I see the progress in the area from the bridge being built.

Was talking to another westerner and he was telling me there are about 25westerners he knows of that live in and around Khong.

Do u think the area will grow that much from the bridge being built?

I know the price of land has gone up a lot.

Thanks for your input so far

WilliamCave,

Welcome anytime.

As to expat nationality in Chiang Khong? I'm US, and the other regulars are a couple of Belgians, a French, a German, another US coming back, and a couple that refuse to answer. But, one is Irish, I'm pretty sure. And, the famous UK cyclist Alan Bate lives here. And, others in and out on monthly bases. The expats here get along pretty well. No duels, yet.

I've PM'ed you with more area specific particulars.

Cheers

Hi William,

Wife and I have been here eight years. Feel free to stop in and say hello anytime, and or pm.

We are not on this site very often so the pm works well.

Cheers David and Mai
