Moth Or Drain Flies - How To Remove?

Featured Replies

Seems we've got a problem with these guys:

Started about a year ago, but they went away after pouring some bleach down the drains. But they are back with a vengeance now. I just did some more bleach, but they were back in 2 days.

We have one of those Thai style septic tanks. It's really just a holding tank, with the runoff going into the drains around the house and out from there. Though I am a bit worried about upsetting the balance of things in this tank.

This article sounds like it's hard work to get rid of them once they are established:

Has anybody else experienced these buggers????

Thanks!!!

No I haven't had a problem with them but I always go around drainage outlets inside and outside every other day spraying with the Baygon.

Looks like you already have your advice on that good info site about finding the source and taking it from there.

What exactly is coming out of the tank ? " with the runoff going into the drains around the house "

This sounds like the main cause to me.:)

Yes, that site has some good advice. Just wondering if anyone here has had problems with these bugs.

Our drains (except kitchen) all go into big tanks. These tanks have a filter (screen with fairly large holes) near the top to keep the large stuff from going out into the perimeter drain. The tanks are pretty much always full, so whatever goes in, just pushes some out. Not a proper septic system for sure, but that's how they work.

Attached pic is an example.

Yes, toilet waste as well as shower and sinks. We just moved in, and we're not here full time. Only 2 of us. So I'd think maybe next year we'll have it pumped out.

Ours is below the ground. No pump. As you know, paying for them to be emptied is not very expensive. Not a setup I'm use to!

I tried your Baygon trick. Sprayed it in the shower drain, floor drain and both sinks. Then plugged them up. Today, flushed with bleach and will do Baygon again tonight. Yesterday...too many bugs to count. Today, only a few!!!! Progress....

Hope you have got them on the run and there thinking of moving. biggrin.png

What sounds strange to me is nothing from the septic tank should be getting into an outside drain.

Our house has separate drainage systems all our toilet effluent is discharged and degraded in the underground built septic structure.

Showers, basins, kitchen water runs out to the drainage system out in the road.

Personally it definitely sounds to me you need a pump out and would recommend one asap.

Mind you we have a toilet like this. rolleyes.giflaugh.png

Yeah. Kinda weird. Everything goes into this tank and the overfill into the drainage pipes around the house, then out to the street. Ugh...
