Is My Hole Too Small?

Featured Replies

I am reticent about starting this topic because I know some of the wags who inhabit this forum will make a meal of it(LOL) BUT I know there are also some serious people who may be able to help me, so here goes.

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a toilet from Global - a nice looking one piece at a reasonable price. Yesterday I unpacked it and to my surpise I found that the bottom exit hole was only 50mm wide - I am used to Uk toilets where the same hole would be 100 mm wide. My concern is that this hole is too small for the toilet to be viable. Anyone have any views on this?

Also anyone know where I can obtain connectors for toilets (ie the (usually)plastic and rubber thing that connects the toilet to the sewage pipe - I live in Korat and nobody seems to have them!

Thanks in advance

were the 50mil hole is, round the outer side of that will be 100 that fits snug inside your waist pipe in the ground, that should be sticking up 5 to 10 min above your tiles,

what i did with mine was i used mastic on top of the plastic pipe and grouted all round the toilet

Welcome to the wonderful world of ( if you pardon the pun) "crap" design .

The plastic waste (soil) pipes are 100mm but the pan's exits are as you describe, it seems manufacturers haven't caught up with that fact yet.

They usually stick a blob of cement on the floor and drop it on that round the flange or I have seen a wax type seal but by far the best is the connector you describe which I have been told is available but never found myself.

Hi Jake

Do I understand from your reply that you have a toilet like this?

My major concern is that the 50mm hole is not big enough to let the solid waste pass through

If you have a toilet like this ie 50 mm exit hole does it flush OK? PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

And by the way just the outside ring on this toilet is 90 mm not 100mm.but thats just another example of wonderful design!!!

Good luck finding things to couple toilet to pipe. If it didn't come with it, then they expect you to install it Thai style, which is to cement it down. with that white stuff that you see in all the bathrooms. I manged to bolt mine down in western style lining up the outlet with the pipe coming out of the floor which I left at about 20mm over the tile. And then I siliconed all around the toilet base. It works, It looks nice too.

Actually this looks more like where the cistern connects to the pan to me rather than the pan to the floor?

Thanks to everyone who answered my post BUT nobody has said if they think or have experience of a 50mm hole being adequate to flush toilet paper and crap out or will it block - quick answers appreciated I'm dying to go!!!!

If possible return the item and exchange for one with a larger hole. We had ones with the small hole in a previous building we owned. There were never ending problems with clogging and failure to fully flush. Upgrading to toilets with a bigger throat solved those problems.

If you have a 100mm downpipe, and it is installed somewhat intelligently. Then all you need to worry about is the toilet itself becoming clogged.

This of course is highly dependent on what you are going to put in there. I suggest a set of calipers left nearby to inspect larger items. blink.png

But seriously, I think you will be fine, but try not to use lots of paper. In Thailand it is very common to keep a bin near the comode to dispose of the paper.

Although who uses paper anyway, when you could be squeaky clean and skid mark free by using Asia's best invention, the bum gum.

Hi canuckamuck

Thanks for your advice. One of my thoughts was as most Thai toilets seem to be syphon types and they discharge the water and other stuff with quite some force that this would break up up the paper etc before leaving the actual bowl.

I'm afraid i just can't get used to the wet arse look and feel

Thanks for the idea with the calipers I was thinking more of placing a 48mm catcher just above the water line!!

You can still dry with paper.

I've bought toiet installation kits at Home Pro, Cotto brand I think. They include the plate that you screw to the floor, the brass blots and nuts to secure the toilet to the plate and the wax seal for the down pipe, but I wasn't able to find extra wax seals to keep as spares so I bought an extra installation kit to have on habnd because they definetly aren't avaialbe where I live.
