Governor wants to revive twin cities

THE NATION

CHIANG MAI: -- New Chiang Mai Governor Thanin Supasaen aims to revive the Thaksin Shinawatra administration’s shelved Chiang Mai-Lamphun twin-cities project.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told Thanin that his priorities as governor will be to crack down on drugs, prevent floods and promote transport and infrastructure development in preparation for the Asean Economic Community.

Thanin says he also plans implement an anti-kickback policy. He also wants to revive the shelved Thaksin-era proposal to make Chiang Mai and Lamphun twin cities, with a specially zoned industrial estate as well as a second airport for Chiang Mai.

from Wikipedia: 'Chiang Mai International Airport receives up to 28 flights a day from Bangkok (flight time about 1 hour 10 minutes) and also serves as a local hub for services to other northern cities such as Chiang Rai, Phrae and Mae Hong Son. International services also connect Chiang Mai with other regional centres, including cities in other South East Asian countries.'

Does anyone know what is the maximum capacity of CNX? Most of the day it seems deserted. Why would Chiang Mai need an additional airport?

If the anti-kickback policy is successful, then definitely no need for a second airport wink.png

Provincial governors are not elected by the local provincial population, they are appointed to do Bangkok's bidding. The Shinawatras and pals own lots of land where the totally redundant 2nd airport would be situated.

"Thanin says he also plans implement an anti-kickback policy."

There isn't one currently?

Only one reason to consider a 2nd airport....rich folks own land where it will be built and they will charge big money to sell the land to the local administration....simply another corrupt moment in the land of smiles, but only the greedy ones will be smiling.

2nd Airport - wow - he's lost his credibility right there. Didn't take long did it.

There can't be more than 20 flights a day going out of CNX if that. If CNX needs a new airport, Heathrow needs 15 more terminals.

Add a decent train connection and flights would be reduced another halve.

Pure Shinawatra business here. No surprise.

What's the odds the proposed site of a second airport is on the Borsang Road, adjacent to the Shinawatra Silk Factory ... as if building the 2nd and 3rd ring-roads running from the existing airport did not give their Chinese customers fast enough access to the place.

Why don`t they just knock down the whole of Lamphun and turn it into Chiang Mai`s second airport?

The place is dead anyway or as they say; nothing to see here folks.
