Non-O To Non-B Help Needed

Featured Replies

I have recently been fortunate enough to have found a job here in Bangkok, but I am currently on a Non-O visa as a dependent of my wife (Teacher).

As I understand it I need to cancel my Non-O visa and leave the same day (is this within 24hrs or actually in the same day?).

Unfortunately I have flights booked next weekend (9th Dec) which is a Sunday. I am flying to Singapore where I will obtain my Non-B.

Can I cancel the visa at the airport?

Can I cancel the visa on Monday and extend for a short term temporary stay as a tourist?

What would be my best (and cheapest) option as I have little cash remaining and cannot afford to cancel flights.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

There is a little more detail: (might be relevant)

I have until the 19th to obtain a re-entry visa as I fly to Vietnam for Christmas.

I must get the visa before the 1st Jan as my recommendation letter expires on 1st Jan.

There is the Kings Birthday on Wednesday which means I could not go this week as I could not fly until Wednesday and I cannot afford to stay in Singapore over a weekend. So I am tied to the week of the 9th.

Non-B visa apparently takes 3 days, but I am a little concerned it may take longer.

You may not need to cancel your extension (it is not a visa). All that is required for a work permit or extension of stay is a non immigrant visa.

You should have your employer to try getting your work permit issued with the extension you have now. If labor will do the work permit you could stay on your current extension of stay.

Unless you have an approved work permit application you will not get a B visa at any nearby consulate.

Thanks for your note, but my current Non-O visa has a remark of: Employment Prohibited.

So I believe this means I must get a new visa, which I cannot do within Thailand :-/

A dependent extension do not believe will support employment so yes expect a new entry with a non immigrant B visa will be required but to obtain that you will require full company paperwork. If not a teaching position you will also have had to make application for a work permit and have that proof (you do not need any special visa to apply for work permit - only to receive it).

You should at least try to get the work permit with your existing extension (it is not a visa). I suspect that the O visa you have in your passport has already expired. That stamp on visa means nothing here.

I already have all this paperwork.

My question is more around how I can cancel the Non-O visa on a Sunday. Can I do it before and have a few days extension?

Leaving the country and re-entering will cancel your extension (it is not a visa). With type of extension you have there is no need to cancel it at immigration.

I have not seen any report of exit issues anywhere but Nong Khai immigration (and only from a work permit/extension) so do not believe there would be any problem leaving - once you leave without a re-entry permit your stay would be invalidated. It is not a case that on such and such a date you are no longer a dependent of your wife (unless you divorce that day) so there should not be any requirement to visit immigration.

So I only need to cancel my multiple re-entry permit and my O visa will get cancelled on exit?

You may have a new visa when you return that will be used for your entry instead of the re-entry permit. No need to cancel it just make sure that immigration doesn't use it when you return.

Returning on your new visa and getting a new permit to stay date will cancel out the permit to stay that you have now from your extension of stay.

That is an additional factor we were not aware of - do not believe there is any way to cancel that and in theory Embassy could say you still have a valid visa for entry so they can not issue a new visa - but do not believe they would or even know what a re-entry permit is.

I am going to go to Lak Si Immigration office Monday and find out what I can do. Will post the answer here for future reference.

I think the 10th is also a holiday.

Terry

The 10th is a government holiday in Thailand.

I would make sure they will be open.
