King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain were greeted yesterday by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Queen Sirikit and Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as they began a three-day state visit to Thailand.

Spain’s King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived yesterday for a three-day visit to Thailand in honor of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne.

Traveling from Vietnam, they arrived at a Thai air force base in the late afternoon, where they were met by His Majesty and Queen Sirikit and a Guard of Honor.

The state visit is the second in the space of a week for His Majesty, who received French President Jacques Chirac last week.

The visit by King Juan Carlos is aimed at firming-up economic ties between the two countries – trade last year was worth more than US$1 billion.

King Juan Carlos is accompanied by 30 business leaders from Spain’s major industries, who are expected to discuss bids for contracts in Thailand’s 1.8 trillion-baht megaprojects.

King Juan Carlos was scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra this morning, followed by appointments with the presidents of the National Assembly and the Supreme Court. He will later meet with members of Thailand’s Spanish community.

On Thursday, he will fly to Chon Buri to visit the Sattahip naval base and inspect the aircraft carrier Chakri Nareubet, ahead of his departure that night. The revered monarch was proclaimed King of Spain in 1975 and helped his country’s transition to democracy following the death of the dictator General Franco.

I am used to take spare parts in my luaggage to save on the import tax. Maybe the Queen+King from Spain are also financing their holidays with taking spare parts to thailand and when they fly home, they fill the royal lagguage with some cheap clothes and fake rolex to sell for their royal friends....

Chakri Narubed was built in Spain - perhaps there are some spareparts in the royal hand luggage? :o
