My personal view

Russian will be the third language, but only if they fix the internet issues.

More like Phuket - but still with 'green areas'.

Bandit Airways charge 50,000 baht return to bangkok.

Six of the biggest International Hospitals in the south of Thailand and all of the motorbike manufacturers will have repair shops here.

The causeway to the mainland and the 'floating' airport will be complete, with Virgin Airlines flying to the US direct.

Finally - OMID will build a casino here.

Samui will go the same (downhill) way as Phuket, only a bit slower due to the limited space versus Phuket AND the fact that Phuket can be reached by cars, buses and motorbikes.

I saw both paradises turn into what they are now also thanks to the extension of the airports of Phuket and Samui, allowing international inbound flights :-(

The absence of good building- and infrastructure laws in the beginning spoiled both islands and the local authorities only think about their own pockets and Provincial income and can't or won't cope with the fast increasing number of tourists.

Next to that there is the ENORMOUS GREED of Thai, thinking that every tourist is a millionaire, ready to be stripped of all his/her assets as fast as possible, not thinking for even a single second that these same tourists spent already a lot of money to travel to LOS in the first place and are "educated"" tourists who warn others about the dangers around the Thai corner.

The increasing impoliteness and lack of service will make the (western) tourist decide to go elsewhere in the near future.

And, there are quite a few other countries around the Asian corner, willing to welcome the western AND Asian tourist.

The Non-problem for the Thai is that there is such a HUGE stream of other tourists coming from Asia...an almost endless growing source of tourism for Thailand.

The biggest problem for the Thai however is that most of these Asian tourists arrive in big groups and spend a shorter period of holiday in LOS, next to the fact that they travel in organized groups and are not of the same kind of "single/couple/family" tourists as their western counterpart tourists and visit Thailand in a fixed time schedule with a day-to-day plan, organized by their travel agent.

The Thai have to adapt to these tourists since they are much more difficult to "grab" and to "strip" of their money than their western counterparts.

But, Samui will be overcrowded, also since the interior is boring and the beaches are limited; the roads are a disaster and very dangerous.

Time will tell and I hope I'm wrong since Samui has a special place in the hearts of my wife and myself but I'm afraid it will go downhill the same way as Phuket.

And that's a real pity!

Even the causeway to Big Budha is tarmac now. However the roads are dangerous and overcrowded at the moment. Interior not bring - tropical with great views. I can still find a quiet beach - for now.

I disagree with this a little bit, I spend a lot of time in Bangkok and stay at the amari don mueang who have been consistently full even when the new airport came, ironic now don mueang has the internals back but that's a different story. Fact is its over run buy Chinese and Indians who are only interested in doing the tours so they can get pics to show friends back home I've never seen so many cameras, videos and iPads as I've seen with those peeps, Bangkok has many photo ops ,what has Samui other than an expensive flight and less than pristine beaches, no character and seriously dirty water I wouldn't take my son to swim on Samui if you paid me. I'd say Samui in 10 years will be lost to every other resort in Thailand as it is the Chinese who make up the numbers and for their 2week holiday there is no way they would spend extra to go to shitemui. However you will get the equivalent Russians to their European counter parts on Samui and they won't spend a penny outside of 7/11 and their hotel room.

In conclusion 7/11 should do ok, Europeans will choose somewhere else, Asians will give Samui a miss but Russians will love it. Scandis have their own little section of Samui and will keep that quiet.

Less than 5 years ago the English were the least liked on Samui but now it's the Russians. Rooms and resorts are being filled but as far as small businesses are concerned, they may just as well be empty. A year - 18 months ago it was argued that it was a language thing so more and more restaurants have has thier munu translated into Russian also but it has little if any effect.

If anyone feels the need to get a few browney points then they should get a TM. 7, translate it into Russian, frame it and present it to the head of Samui immigration to hang on the wall.

A Chinese tourists: make that thousands, not specifically to Samui but to Thailand as a whole..better make that tens of thousands of Chinese tourists.

I know for a fact that hundreds of flights from China to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore in the first 2 months of 2013 are fully booked and the demand is very high.

The Russian tourists are leading in numbers at the moment I heard; don;t know about Samui but Thailand in general.

Thailand has to adapt to those tourists since they're NOT staying away nor leaving. Their numbers will increase by the year.

The time that Thai tourism was a pure Western Farang thing has long gone and will NEVER come back. Asian tourism will increase enormously and overtaking Farang tourism by FAR.

B I agree; there are still a few nice places on Samui with secluded beaches but that was the same on Phuket; I knew places on Phuket where NOBODY came; same-same on Samui but now, those beaches on Phuket are completely taken over by hotels, restaurants villas and apartment buildings.

The same will happen in Samui, no doubt about that!

The big bucks from BKK, working together with large investment and hotel companies abroad, have so much power that it's not possible to stop them. Every single beach will be occupied in a few more years :-(

In the decade or so since they were installed the traffic lights @ Maenam have never functioned correctly (all 4 directions see Green at the same time). Others (Bophut, Tesco,Lam Din) require guesswork as to when to go/stop because some colours aren't working.

I wonder where this will be in ten years time?

In ten years, Samui will have continued to grow and Thai politics will not have changed so some of the same problems will still exist and there will be plenty of new ones. The new electric cable will have been run which is expected to handle the power requirements for the next 10 years, but nothing will have been done to increase the capacity beyond that, so the blackouts will start again and will be more frequent. If TV still exists, members will be posting the same complaints, but I probably won't since I'll most likely be long gone. TIT, live with it because you love it and you won't change it no matter what you do!

I initially assumed they were driving Thai style but on studying the lights realised that "forward" & "turn" were Green at the same time........from both directions on the ring road.

2002 was a boom time does anyone believe samui will see boom like yrs again? i hope so but I dont see it happening.
