While on the topic of Chinese poached chicken served with ginger scallion oil sauce on the side, does anyone know of a Chinese restaurant in town that does that?

I know of places that do the poached chicken but served with garlic oil, not ginger scallion oil, and also cold Shanghai chicken soaked in rice wine is available. But I've never seen the classic poached chicken with ginger scallion oil here. Anywhere. Any clues?

I so love the dish that I make my own ginger scallion oil (easy!) to serve with simple poached chicken. But I've been too lazy to do the actual full Chinese method whole chicken on the bone and chopped correctly. 

To add a place you can get the poached chicken with garlic oil is the Chinese place north of Central, south of Klang, going north from Central Mall, opposite side of mall.

Shanghai chicken in rice wine is available at Shanghai restaurant, 3rd road, a bit south of Pattaya North road.

Didnt see it mentioned anywhere on here but for those who like a bargain, Pizza Pizza in The Avenue is doing it's Margherita promo at 79B again. I've been waiting two years for this to come back: totally unbeatable at the price, and good quality. This is Italian-style pizza and so may not suit those who like US-style pizza.

The chain 'bought' the recipes and rights to the name off the chef that won the Michelin star, and technically it's the same chef that turns up on opening day and maybe supervise on the quality for a bit?  Can't fault they guy for 'cashing in' though

 

Hawker Chan the chain is run by the same group that runs Tim Ho Wan which is also playing on the Michelin star laurel too.

 

It's no different than when hotels make a point about having 'Michelin starred' chef on residence even though the star is awared to the restaurant, not the chef of restaurateur

Try taking the Baht bus from the beginning of Soi Boukeaw ( if you are coming from Tai) at the market and going along to just after the second Tesco Lotus. 

 

There is quite a large food market there. 

 

Loads of choice , cheap as chips and very few Iranians on the bus. There is at least one Israeli establishment as well, if that helps, however it does not have many good reviews.

It would be more helpful if you mentioned specific dishes and specific stalls in that market. I think it's known at the Soi Boukeaw DAILY market and it should not be confused with the limited days large market near Pattaya Tai. It seems obvious to me the only reason you posted that was a cheap baiting game so that you could mention Iranians and to trash an Israeli restaurant that I'm doubting that you have ever tried. That kind of post is not welcome here.

I think people often confuse the two markets.

What have you tried there? 

Cheap yes. 

I haven't found anything really good  to eat in that market other than the restaurants. 

There are two sit down restaurants worth considering. 

A Greek one called Akropolis I think up the stairs on the left hand side approaching from Buakow. I think it's OK but not the best Greek in town. 

Then there is Simon's Israeli / Middle Eastern food up the stairs approaching from the right from the soi. 

Very good and also well priced made from scratch food including the pitas. 

They are featuring the hummus now offering a wide variety of toppings for it.

Maybe it's called the Buakhow NIGHT market.

 

In any case, you can see Central Pattaya Mall from the market so that gives a good idea of it's location on Soi Buakhow.

 

Some more information on the actual restaurants located on the two opposite sides of the market. Acropolis is further back and Simon's is very close to Soi Buakhow, both located up stairs.

The BBQ stall located outside and part of the Aranya Grand on Pratumnak near Soi 6 . Seating in hotel verandah.  Cheap prices, large portions. I had hoi tod for 50 baht.

I was happy to see that Hawker Chan (soy sauce chicken) at Royal Garden had a healthy crowd last night. I was getting kind of worried seeing it so empty so often. I really want them to make it as I love having that option for a delicious, light, quick and easy, moderately priced meal. I find just a chicken with rice or noodle order isn't enough for a full meal so order a side like the Chinese broccoli or the Thai style tofu. 

 

Adjacent to Hawker Chan is another new restaurant. SWEETISH. This is Turkish but not branded that way. You would have to be able to identify Turkish dishes from the menu or being told by the predictable Thai greeter "Turkish food" to know. The prices are really quite high there which I'm sure is necessary to cover the rent there. But talk about a place that has been EMPTY. I won't even try it once at their prices. Hopefully they'll go on eatigo.

Went to Retox this morning on Lengkee to watch the world series.  About the second inning ordered the 99 b breakfast.

Still watching the game in the 7th inning and the lady manager kicks me out saying my seat is for customers only.  The place was about 1/3 full.  I was doing nothing wrong but just sitting.

 

I will never go back to the place but will ask; should I have ordered a coffee or something more to justify my existence in that seat?

She should have come up and politely asked you if you wanted a drink. I sure you would have got the message. If she just kicked you out and that was me ( but I would have ordered a drink or something after a while not having a pop at you) I wouldn't go back to. Sounds like the boss needs to do more training.

 

 

Actually I do find the staff a bit rude in there. Not the other retox bars just that one. One of the girls shouted at me once when I forgot to put the paper back as I was leaving. I know it asks you to but so what no need to shout at me. I wonder if it was the same girl I bet it was.

I didn't like it was that Thinnest pizza I ever had the base was like a cracker. I looked at the pizza other people was eating and they looked normal. Also it was slightly burnt. And the beer was quite expensive. But I suppose not bad for 79THB.

MORE THAN EAT (or a similar name)

Pimped out (in a good way) modern NORTHERN Thai in NORTHERN Pattaya

 

Located in back of Marina Mall, roughly near the location of this closed restaurant, on the west side of the street.

This is a new restaurant. The decorations are extensive and charming. 

The menu is in Thai only but there are pictures. A waitress was able to tell me what the meat was in the dishes but generally couldn't provide any more information about what the dishes were. I've eaten in more traditional Northern Thai restaurants including in Chiang Mai but the only dishes that were really familiar to me were the Khao soi dishes.

I was told they will probably translate the menu at a later date. 

 

In any case, Thai speakers or not, you'll be welcomed warmly regardless.

 

So I decided to try one of the Khao soi dishes. The cuttlefish at 180 baht. (Don't faint at the price.)

 

They don't do food court or street food Khao soi.

 

It's a fancy, modern, creative interpretation but it's still very recognizable as Khao soi including all the traditional elements as well.

For example non-traditional meats are offered including duck, salmon, large cuttlefish, grilled pork.

The portion was large and the presentation spectacular.

The flavor was wonderful as well.

I don't know where you could get a better Khao soi in town at any price.

Was it really worth the premium price? That's a personal judgement call. You're also paying for the ambiance (it really is something worth seeing) which doesn't mean that much to me, but it does to others.

Yes, I've been to both and have been very impressed with both.

Warm welcome from the owner. 

NORTH Indian food. Rich (heavier) flavors.

Some specialties you don't see everywhere such as boiled eggs covered with lamb in a spicy gravy.

This is from the same owners as the well known Govinda vegetarian on Klang. This one is has non-veg as well and a variety of Indian cuisines.

I found the food very good.

Also a warm welcome and caring for the customer here. 

 

It's almost ridiculous how many decent choices there are these days for Indian food.

Different styles, both recommended for the more adventurous.

 

XIANG LI XIANGQIN

Pattaya Klang, south side, close to 3rd road

 

This is a very ambitious Chinese restaurant. The chef is from Beijing and they also feature a number of Sichuan dishes.

They now have a picture menu but best to bring a translation app as the text doesn't always match what the menu seems to say, and sometimes the pictures aren't very close either.

 

There is one male staff person that speaks a little English. Emphasis on a little

 

The wonderfulness of the food varies but when it's wonderful it's very wonderful. 

 

One of the best versions of ma po tofu you'll find in town. I particularly enjoyed the cumin beef and the spicy morning glory salad. Avoid the Beijing sauce noodles. Also avoid the eggplant in sauce dish. Weirdly and disgustingly TOO MUCH SUGAR!

 

For Sichuan dishes that are approrpriate they will make "MA-LA" on request. That's Ma for the tingly Sichuan pepper and La for the more familiar spicy hot pepper. They will not make dishes that shouldn't be MALA MALA which I give them respect for.

 

I even ordered some off the menu MALA dishes. Both were very good. Dry coated MALA fried eggplant and also dry coated MALA bitter melon.  I recommend ordering the mapo tofu MALA (otherwise it will probably come just LA).

 

I think there are some dishes there that people seeking more typical western style dishes would like as well. I think I saw a sweet and sour pork which looked like a typical more western version and also perhaps the Yu Shiang slice pork which is a similar dish found on many western Chinese menus. Excellent version of Twice Cooked Pork, but be warned it's pork belly meat, not fillet. I tried their hot and sour soup twice (huge portion). First time it was excellent, second time awful. Maybe main cook's night off but there that famous local inconsistency again!

The prices are moderate for local decent Chinese. For example the mapo tofu is 200 and the cumin beef about 350.

This place is kind of a hole in the wall.

The prices are lower for Pattaya area Chinese, but the quality varies.

There is a picture menu but there is only Chinese language. 

Bring a translator app.

The young man that works there can help ... a bit.

They now have noodles they make in house (with a machine). You can get them in various noodle soups including a dry dish. They're all good but I suggest the beef noodle soup version, 150 baht.

They have different kinds of dumplings than you see most places. You'll have to experiment with those.

How about some chicken wings in dark soy sauce? 160

The mapo tofu (120) is a very poor version.

There is also some extreme inconsistency. For example, the Chinese style chicken curry. First time I got it, it was scrumptious, had vegetables, and was a family size portion.

Second time, no vegetables, and about 1/4 the portion of chicken and not chopped in the usual Chinese style. That's pretty bad so I won't order THAT dish again. 

This is not a Sichuan restuarant. You can ask for dishes to be more hot pepper spicy though (Chinese is LA). 

But don't judge this place because some dishes are sub par. 

There is enough on the menu that really hits the spot (in a home style way) that it's worth being tolerant of not everything being great.

Many of you already know this place for very good quality Italian food, pizza, pasta, etc. Prices and drinks a bit steep but at least not plus plus.

 

Anyway ... they have a lunch special on daily until 5 p.m.

 

That's what this post is about.

 

You get a main course, dessert, and small drink (water/soft drink/Chang draft) for 290 from noon till 5.

 

Main courses:

 

Lasagna w/ bolognese sauce, mixed salad

OR

Canneloni filled w/ ricotta cheese and spinach, mixed salad

OR

White fish fillet, Mediterranean sauce, vegetables

OR 

Stewed pork shoulder w/ red wine sauce, vegetables

 

Dessert choices are creme brulee or two scoops of ice cream

 

This seems a very good deal for the level of food at Marcos.

Hawken Chan UPDATE

(beachfront Royal Garden Mall)

Currently they are handing out 10 percent off coupons and also if you spend 600 baht, free vegetable dish. The small promotion seems to be working at filling plenty of seats with hungry asses.

Another member mentioned their wonton soup was very poor. I decided to try it and agree the broth is minimally flavored but found the wontons themselves to be very excellent. Overpriced though.

On their signature soy sauce chicken plates, it's always a smallish portion but how small seems really inconsistent. My last portion was almost unacceptably small as the pieces I got had so much bone. Luck of the draw really!

This very new place which seemed to have a questionable business concept from the start was DARK (closed) on Friday night.

A sign in the window said "Sorry for the Inconvenience."

What inconvenience? If people weren't eating there, who's inconvenienced?

UPDATE on this place.

The super cheap Italian promotion prices are long gone now.

They are now serving some Chinese BBQ type dishes and also some Thai food.

They also have a large menu printed that includes their Vietnamese, Malaysian, Singaporean, and Indonesian dishes. But they don't have any of those yet. I was told in a month or so, but the person telling me didn't sound very confident about that at all.

But hope still springs eternal so I'll post their menu, which you can't get yet!

Chinese restaurant

 

That's all I know.

Recently, a Chinese restaurant called YIPINLOU has been advertising heavily on baht buses.

At first I wasn't even sure it was a restaurant because one of their ads doesn't show any food.

But then I saw another of their ads for the side of the buses where Chinese food pictures are clearly shown.

But none of the text in the ad is in English. The name doesn't show any local results in google although there is a restaurant of that name in Kaifeng CHINA. So this place is a total mystery to me at this point.

First question, where the YIPIN is it?!?

I'd avoid it like the plague. Oriented towards Chinese tourists.
