Which Insulation To Use In My Ceiling?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy new aircon this week and I want to insulate the ceiling at the same time, the ceiling is a hung ceiling so I'm wondering which of the following insulators to use, which one of these should I buy? If any? Homepro insulation.

Thanks in advance!

you should think about the blanket style 'stay cool' or the like but cheaper from Global house

I can understand the thicker the better but I think this might be adequate 3 inch ex-cool homebase

It's all about the R value - I used a Global House brand because 2 years ago it gave the best R value to Baht.

The big other thing you should do is have some sort of venting on the roof space - plenty of posts here about that subject!

We've been in our new house since May last year.

We have suspended ceilings, no insulation, no roof vents, no A/C's (but electrics in place if needed later), but we do have quite a number of 16" adjustable height fans (500 baht from Makro) and 2 x 1000L water tanks in the loft.

Was planning on vents, but they never arrived.

We'd spent most of the 9 month construction phase in a "shack" during the heat of the day, with a single fan to keep cool. No problem for us and that principle kinda spilled over into the house.

The electric company wanting 180k baht for a new transformer to serve the projected future needs of the area if we had A/C's also helped tip the balance.

The water tanks in the loft act as a heat-sink, mopping up some of the heat from the loft and enabling us, most of the time, to use the shower unit without the heater being on.

Most of our living area external walls are shaded from direct sunlight for most of the day, by Thai-style eaves, a front and back porch or the garage.

It works for us, but may not for others due to different acclimatisation (we moved here after many years in middle eastern heat) and/or physical house design or orientation.

Remember that, say in UK, you are insulating to keep heat that rises in. In Thailand your A/C's are producing cold air that sinks. Here you need to minimise leakage of your cold air under doors and through windows. I don't mind if the air near our high ceilings is warmer than it is where I'm sitting. We have an open plan throughout the ground floor and have an extractor fan in the kitchen ceiling in addition to the regular cooker hood.

Hope this helps with another perspective on the problem.

I used two layers of 0.6 x 4m x 3" layed at right angles to each other. Would have used 6" but wasn't avaiable at the time.

I used the 60cm wide blankets rather than the wider ones so that they could fit between all of the wires used to hang the ceiling,. My ceiling panels are 60 x 60.

As HSSL said it is all about the R value, a one inch material with R- 10 provides better insulation than a Two inch material with an R-5

For suspended ceiling a lightweight material such as fiberglass batt with an R-11 will suffice

I looked at the link That MaiDong provided and the product looked sufficient but it did not provide an R value in the description, how odd TIT

PS: most fiberglass bat insulation is designed to fit in the cavity created by wood stud or metal stud framing, R11 is 31/2 inch and is for 2x4 construction R19 for 2x6 and are R32 for 2x10 of course as production processes improve different manufacturers might achieve a higher R value for a particular thickens.

Thanks for your replies.

My house has gables at the front but I'm not sure how effective they are, they may be more effective when the other vent(our crappy ceiling tiles) is closed off with insulation.

I looked for a global house near us but they all seem to be in the provinces, I haven't really had the time to look around anywhere else, that's why I rely on finding things online, has anybody had any recent purchasing experience in Bangkok?

Fibreglass Pink Batts, in clear plastic sleeves, 1200 x 600mm, lay over the ceiling. Do NOT cover recessed light fittings and control equipment. Ideal for a T-Bar ceiling.
