BANGKOK: -- An alleged gang leader from Germany escaped Interpol officers at the Suvarnabhumi International Airport earlier this month while waiting for a connecting flight to Germany.

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) and the Immigration Police will convene this Monday to investigate the events of May 15, which is when the suspect escaped.

The suspect was arrested and charged in Australia but somehow managed to escape while on the trip back to Germany.

Interpol Lose Their Man in Bangkok Airport

i.png

BANGKOK: -- Interpol seem to have egg on their faces this week, as a German prisoner they were transporting back to Australia to face charges, escaped from their custody at Bangkok airport during a flight transfer.

Unknown to Thai authorities, the Interpol agents are said to have been transporting the prisoner, when he disappeared from the transit lounge on Sunday.

And the gang leader said to the Interpol special agent, "Look at that pretty airplane taking off!" And when the agent turned around again, gang leader was gone. Then getting through airport security to grab a taxi non-stop to Pattaya probably took all the effort of tying your shoe.

Doesn't give me much confidence in general security at the Airport.

I think in this case the egg is solely on Interpol. It's not the Thai police's fault that Interpol never even informed them that they were transiting Thailand with a prisoner until after the prisoner managed to get escape from their custody, presumably with his own passport.

Would he have been carrying his own passport though Trembly?

Should not be a big problem to catch him in Germany when the plane lands then, or did I miss something?

Edit: After reading it again, it seems he did not board any flight so the above assumption is wrong :)

Depends on which article you believe... One has him going to Germany and the other has him going to Australia...

I think this story is more than a little inaccurate as Interpol does not escort prisoners. If he was being extradited to Germany then police officers from that country would have gone to Australia to collect him.

If he was a supposed gang leader, it wouldn't have been hard to have someone meet him at Swampy with a fake passport, they could have even been on the same flight.

I'm not sure. I assumed that he got on a flight, which would mean that he had a passport, but upon reading again it's not clear where he went after giving Interpol the slip.

Wonder if someone in transit on that day reported their passport missing?

I would have thought that it would be compulsory for escorts to inform the authorities of the transiting country (in this case Thailand) that they had a fugitive in tow. I am certain that the airline would have to be informed.

Does this guy have a name? How about posting a photo of him? I'd keep my eyes open here in Pattaya if I knew what he looked like... All seems a bit odd to me. Bader-Meinhof gang?
