I would like information/details of plastic surgeries or hospitals to remove some lumps and skin tags from my stomach and back about 20 in total. On my last visit to Thailand I had consultation at Bunrungrad and was Quoted 100,000 to 150,000 Baht or about £3,000, does this sound about right or does anyone know where I could get a better deal in Bangkok? The surgeon said it would require a general operation that would also require a stay in the hospital.Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

Hummm ... I'm no doctor but ...

Firstly, why a 'plastic surgeon'?

Skin tags can be removed simply by trying (very tightly) a cotton loop around the base and they then drop off.

The skin tag removal question was asked only last week at removal-of-skin-tag so lot's of good recent comment and opinion there. No scarring ... nothing.

As for the 'lumps' ... if they are the size of say a pea that appear just below the skins surface then they could simply be benign lumps.

My local GP (Doctor) did the string method for the removal of skin tags and small local to open up the skin, remove the small lump and then 3 stitches and I was right as rain.

I'd be seeking a 'second opinion' before I blew 150,000 Baht.

Please also don't see me as bagging the Bumrungrad Hospital ... I've had some work done there and have nothing but praise for their service.

I hope this comment has been of help.

Skin tags are indeed easy to remove as an outpatient but I am not sure about these "lumps", what are they? Lipomas?

IF so:

Normally it is possible to remove lipomas as an outpatient procedure using local anesthetic. If there are very many of them and you wanted it all done at one time that might warrant a general but there may still be an alternative of getting this done in stages, a few at a time, on an outpatient basis.

Once removed it will be necessary to have the lipoma examined by a pathologist to make sure it was a benign lipoma and not a liposarcoma.

And it is advisable to have the removal done by a plastic surgeon to minimize scarring.

Even taking into account the path exams (add 1-2,000 baht per specimen for that) and general anesthsia (which as mentioned may be avoidable, though it might mean doing this in several sessions instead of one), the amount you were quoted seems high to me.

I suggest you seek other opinions. Try Assoc. Prof.Dr.Sirachai Jindarak at Vejthani. You can also try yanhee hospital (www.yanhee.net) and I think they can give you a virtual consultation -- email them photos.

If I'm guessing wrong and the "lumps" aren't lipomas then please advise what they are.

That's another matter then. Be sure you specify thiscondition when you seek advise and try to get a doctor experienced in removal of these lesions.
