I had a Thai contractor and 15 of his men want to fight me because i asked to stop draining water into the dirt road making it a mud pit which the children coming home from school had to walk through they couldn't go around because of a barbed wire fence .. I called the police they wouldn't help thank god for many friends i called them they came and we cooled the situation down .. but you ever had a problem with some one wanting to fight you .. I guess not .. even the tourist police were useless ... I have lived here over 30 + years and found the police next to useless ...

Yep; I'm afraid you told it as it is . . . . . This is one of the reasons why I loved Canada, my friend; even the lowest cop there would not be able to don a uniform, unless he had at least attained a college education. Here in Thailand it seems that the regular street-cops come straight form the country-side, attend some brief training-session, then get handed uniform, handcuffs & gun - followed by their presence on the streets of Thailand , , , , , I also vividly remember that test they gave to ALL the Traffic-Officers (I use that 'Officer' term loosely !) and we were told in the Bangkok Post that 87% of these guys failed that test, which was equal to the written part of the driver's licence test ! ! - And these are the guys enforcing "Traffic-Laws" whereas they have no clue what's actually in the laws . . . . . .

If ti wasn't so serious it would be funny; but nobody is laughing . . . . . .

Well, I only call the police because my insurance needs a statement from them with an official stamp so I can claim compensation from my insurer.

They are victims...mainly Farang victims because they concentrate their helmet enforcement activities in the tourist zone. They also concentrate solely on helmets and ignore all other traffic infringements while they're actively looking for helmetless riders.

You never see police outside school zones where underage kids ride 5-up without helmets.

It's all about revenue. It's the easiest earn.

Think you have the problem well out of focus. Whilst I agree that such "crackdowns" are a routine part of law enforcement they are normaly put in place owing to an increase in a specific activity.

In Pattaya as well as many other parts of Thailand it is the cause and effect syndrome that gives rise to the problems. It is because they do not do their job as a routine daily task that they have to at least be seen having these "crackdowns" which are no more than doing their job in the first place. Perhaps if they at least discharged their duties on a daily basis they would be far less reports of people being roobbed or having their bikes stolen.

But I certainly agree that these grand and occasional displays of doing their job is silly. Do they really not understand that many people see it the same as you -- only doing the job they're paid for every day on special occasions?

Yes completely agree with what Wavefloater is implying, as crash helmets by not being worn will ONLY affect the silly stupid bugger who insists on not wearing one, nobody else. Laws are there primarily to protect the innocent from the crimes of others and should never be imposed to protect idiots from their own stupidity. Same with seat belts too as NO OTHER PERSON is affected whether you wear one or not. So IMHO it is equally stupid (in fact crazy) and inefficient of police resources to have this sort of thing written into law and thus take up masses of valuable police time enforcing such unimportant and unnecessary laws. Never agreed with such laws anywhere in the world for the sound sensible reasons stated. So I repeat clearly that it should never be law to have to wear a seat belt in a car or crash helmet on a motorbike as it is no danger to other people only to the idiot choosing stupidly not to wear them..

I do get fed up with over protective nanny molly coddling laws designed to control us from our own self inflicted dangers, these sort of issues when others are not affected should be down to each individual in the sound principals of sensible levels of freedom.. Personally I always wear a crash helmet and always wear a seat belt too, but that is solely MY choice and not because of any stupid over protective unneeded laws. If I too was stupid and did not want to wear a crash hat then I would not wear one irrespective of over restrictive laws. Of course any injury related directly to the not wearing of a crash hat or seat belt should NOT be covered by any insurance scheme or the 30 Baht scheme if that still exists. There are way too many unnecessary laws already that tie up police time which could and should be used for solving real anti social crimes like they are supposedly cracking down on this weekend.

Its not like they get fantastic salaries. You get what you pay for.

I am disappointed that in the announcement they also didn't mention which places were going to be the focus of the crackdown. Not a very proper invitation: need the who (criminals, okay) what (crackdown, ditto), where (Pattaya is too vague), why (so we look good and warn our patrons).

We know that Pattaya is wrought with drugs and crime, so that means that aggressive policing is required on a permanent basis -- not just the occasional crackdown. And I realize that there is a fine line here -- too much police presence turns visitors off and shows them just how dangerous Pattaya really is -- too little invites more criminals to join the party. But I, and apparently others, feel strongly enough that the BIB are certainly very corrupt and generally insincere in doing their job unless there is cash to be pocketed in the situation. Yes, we're likely going to call the BIB if our bike is stolen or we are robbed, but how much faith are we going to have that any justice will come from it? Many police forces around the world deserve much praise and little criticism, but I can't really say that's true of the BIB.

Why would anyone live in an area that they say "too much police presence turns visitors off and shows them just how dangerous Pattaya really is " I have only lived here one year, but I have never felt threatened at any time, by anyone. I know all of Pattaya, and all of the villages. Not one problem. Where do you hang out, and what do you do, that puts you in dangerous situations? I would analyze myself first if I found trouble around every corner, and finding nothing wrong there, I would definitely move elsewhere where my safety was assured.

I guess no Tuk Tuks or Jet skis operating this weekend. If Chalerm cleaned up the place in his 90 day crackdown, what is this, just a little bit of mopping up and minor maintenance?

Thing is, back in farangland, the police don't get paid $240.00 USD per month. Also they don't have to buy their own guns, amo, bikes etc.

I am the first one to stand up and say yes they are corrupt as it gets and I can say this from experience but come on guys this is just a crack-down. Shouldn't bother us in the least.

Pattaya Police prepare for weekend crime crackdown

I am sure the criminals will appreciate the heads up. They can now make plans for a weekend holiday and return on Monday for business as usual.

These rediculous crack downs only last for VERY short time periods and they are then forgotten by the BIB. The BIB doesn't seem to be able to enforce more than a few laws at any one time.

How about enforcing all of the laws relating to dangerous situations, all of the time and forget the stupid smaller problems like Viagra sales and 200 baht "gambling dens".

Crack downs would work fine if they were not publicised.
