If no one answers beforehand,I'm gonna go there, find out and I will let you know on July 6. If they are, I'd suspect it would be getting built near Tesco somewhere.

Its written "Chum Phae".

Heard this too and will try to verify today when in town.

Makro is somewhat standardized and usually "quite big".

Would be good news and bad news.

The bad news is the attraction of an awful lot more of traffic, as it will have a trading area of about 50 km (~ 30 mi) in radius.

The Thai Wiki says "under construction" (กำลังก่อสร้าง):

If I got it right, they are doing job interviews next month:

Would make sense to move this thead to the Isaan section.

Its written however you wish in English. we all understand where the op means. I write Choom Pearwink.png . anyhow, its bad news for the area. Like having Tescos is. The money should go to the local traders, not these overseas based corporates. The locals tried to stop Tesco with no success.

can't stop urbanization, incomes rise, people want more shopping options. Mom n Pops need to upgrade, specialize, and do whatever they can to be competitive. I agree it would be nice if more mid range, privately owned shops filled the needs, but they dont tend to have the capital to expand as fast upcountry. The big players do. big fish eats small fish.

Sorry for my grave misspelling of "Chum Phae"...! Regarding "standardized" ,they come in different sizes. The one in Chayaphum is much smaller than the one in Khon Kaen, for instance.Depends on location I guess. Hope I spell the citynames correct;that is how I written them for 20 years already...

I don't agree here I love the Makro if the traders want to have my business then they just need to get better products against a better price. If I am not doing my business good should it survive because of lack of competition ?

Unrestrained capitalism in most circumstances will lead to predatory monopolies.

A smart buyer will try to ensure a variety of sellers exist so that he isn't left at their mercy.

Plus it's often worth paying a slightly higher price for the extra values that small traders can add, for example a local bookseller you can chat with rather than going to Borders (RIP).

Maybe, but there are enough big stores to make sure that there is no monopoly so that really is not the point.

I don't mind paying a bit more if a store has a deep assortment and good service, unfortunately that is not the case with Thai sellers. I feel that the Makro holds quite a deep assortment of stuff.

On the other hand I have no problem visiting market stalls at times but many of the things I like are only at Makro's and other big supermarkets.

Thing is if a small shop-owner competes with them in either service or quality it can survive. If it can't not a big loss.

I got many small businesses as clients (accountant here) and they seem to survive, because they give good value and quality. But for things like a washing machine its hard to ad extra quality or service to it and compete with an online shop. You can read reviews online and then make your choice.. i am not like those cheapo's who go to a small company for service and information and then buy it online.

Isn't the idea of Makro to be a wholesale outlet with membership required and aimed at supplying the smaller, retail outlets, hotels and similar businesses in the area?

I can understand objections to Tesco etc. as they are retail, but surely Makro would be a "good thing" for the Ma and Pa shops in the vicinity of Chum Phae as the owners would not have to travel to, for example, Khon Kaen to re-stock.

Obviously you have never visited a Makro in Thailand, they let everyone in its not like back in the UK (i presume) or back in The Netherlands (for sure) where it was only open to retailers.

But what it is is more choice for consumers that don't have to accept the inflated mom and pop shops with over-date products.

My 'significant other' has a card for Makro in Khon Kaen, she runs a small business and got the card by providing some documents related to that, I do see a good few 'farang' in Makro on the few occasions that I go there with her so maybe you are right about "let everyone in".

I have no business but i got a card too, think the only requirement was that i was able to breathe as proof that i was still alive.

I took some pictures of the buildung site. But a bit boring up to now. Just a big plot, a number of machines, trucks and pillars to see.

Probably a good thing for your business, just stick up some more of those Ben's Bar billboard posters outside the new stores, like you did at the existing Tesco store. It should open you up to new customers who did not know about you before.
