Pre-paid sim for internet with unlimited (or large limit) on 3G data

Hi all

Any suggestions for a 1 month pre-paid sim card allowing unlimited 3G access - that is, no data limt (or a limit of at least 10GB) after which they throttle down to 2G/Edge ? I got a DTAC card with 1GB data limit when I arrived, but sadly I just surpassed the limit (after just less than 3 days) and I find the throttled speed unusable.

Thanks

Since you already have a DTAC SIM, and it appears to be functioning properly, maybe just ring up DTAC on 1678, cancel your current plan, add baht, subscribe to a 5 GB plan *890 baht plus 7% VAT, 384 Kbps FuP), rinse.repeat in 15 days when you burn through that?

When you went over the limit of 3G on Dtac you should have got a text SMS message to tell you how to top it up.

True Move H have a plan for 49baht/day which is unlimited, i have been using it for a very long time.

Just put credit, and dial *900*01#

DTAC sometimes offers a 1 GB/150 baht "power up" option once you reach your cap, but not sure that is enough for the OP?

TrueMove H did have a 10 GB (384 Kbps FuP) option but I cannot find that on their current web-pages. (Monthly Net 1699: 10 GB/384 Kbps FuP, 1,699 THB, code is/was *900*47# call/send)

True Move H have a plan for 49baht/day which is unlimited, i have been using it for a very long time.

Believe the FuP on the 49 baht daily plan is 140 MB per day (the English language page says 140 GB! ), with a 384 Kbps speed limit cap.

Got True Move H 5GB for 970 Baht incl. VAT prepaid, very good speed and very good coverage. I think it should be enough is you just look video streams and not download HD movies via torrent etc.? Also, you could just get a second SIM card and have the same plan on it, which would make it 10 GB.

Someone was talking about the 49 Baht/day option... is that still available? Only 1500 Baht a month for being truly unlimited?

Edit: Just read the previous post, I guess not then.

With an advertised 384 kbps speed limit cap, what is the actual speed you generally get with True Move?

When you went over the limit of 3G on Dtac you should have got a text SMS message to tell you how to top it up.

Problem with that is that all the SMS messages are in Thai. Sadly, I never learned to read Thai.

You can ask the Dtac operator to set your phone service to English. You will still get some promotions in Thai, but most of the important stuff and balances you request will be in English.

If you have one of their dearer unlimited plans DTAC give you free access to their Wi-Fi hotspots, according to the tariff page on the Happy web-site. If you can't get 10gig then that should help.

It really depends which area you stay.

A good test is always, if you are on a Android, install the App Network Signal info. Remove your sim, restart the mobile. Newer Smartphones connect to the strongest network.

with the network signal info you see also

the net type, mostly everyone adverts up to 42Mbit. Depends ob your cell I would say your max speed is 7.2Mbit.

Dataplan, depends your usage, you can subscribe in most cases via key codes, see the postings before.

The only 4g is atm. True. Central Silom BKK, within 3-5km you get a 4g signal.

The speed depends too, within Silom you may get 48mbit down 10mbit up. Dtac and Ais download rate are similar, it is something between 3-5mbit, inside Bkk.

In general outside bkk, dtac has the fastest net, followed by true. Ais sucks. I gave up testing it. Ais has a good telephone coverage, their net sucks.

Inside bkk, True, if you travel a lot dtac or true, dtac for best customer and service and true for their good performance. If voice is needed and you plan to stay in the deepest iSahn go with Ais.

DTAC just recently announced their Triple Net Package. My wife just got a new sim for her smartphone and pays month to month 299 baht for unlimited internet and 100 minutes worth of calling to any other sim phone and free coming on all calls. I believe I saw in their brochure where unlimited "everything" was under 500 per month.

Thanks again guys

FYI I am staying in Samut Prakan, near the Big C, and I'm using Android (Nexus 4).

I did get a text from dtac offering 150Bht for 1GB. Since I am here till the end of August I am thinking of soldiering on till tomorrow, then as per @lomatopo, cancelling the current plan, and subscribing to a 5GB plan for 890 baht plus 7% VAT, 384K FuP, which I assume will give me 1 calendar month (so expiring on 30 Aug when I leave) and then topping up when the 5GB is gone, as needed.

BTW, the dtac wifi hotspot offer sounds very interesting. Thanks @Stjohnm.

Unlimited, yes, but how much data at 3G speed before DTAC slows you down to a speed from zero to 35 kbps? Their website does no load at the moment and therefore I cannot verify it myself.

FWIW, mobile data plans run until the same day number in the following month ( so 15 July to 14 August, ~ 30-ish days) rather than by the calendar month ( 1 July - 31 July ), so you may be soldiering on for a bit longer. You can cancel an existing package at any time by ringing DTAC on 1678, wait for the confirming SMS, add value, subscribe to a new plan.

DTAC has by far the smallest affiliated WiFi plan so if that is a requirement you may be better off with TrueMove H (claimed 100,000 hotpsots) or AIS (60,000 hotpsots via 3BB), both of which have tens of thousands of affiliated WiFi hotpsots.

DTAC's 49 baht daily plan has a FuP of 150 Mega-Bytes and a speed cap of 64 Kbps.

That's very helpful - thanks. I just called dtac and they said I should activate the new account tomorrow (31 July) in order for it to end on 30 Aug, as you indicated. So I think that's what I'll do.

Wifi hotspots are not a big concern. However, having said that, it would be nice if there are any hotspots not too far away. I have the Wi-Fi Finder app, and even with the range set to include the whole of Bangkok, I can't find any hotspot with "dtac" as the provider - do you know if dtac uses a different name or third parties for their hotspots ?
