No Al Qaeda threat to Phuket – top policeman

PHUKET: -- The island has no need to worry about the Al Qaeda threat alert issued by the US in the past couple of days, says Phuket Provincial Police Deputy Commander Col Arun Kaewvatee.

Col Arun told The Phuket News this afternoon, “I am aware of this news. In fact I have just come out of a meeting chaired by the Governor [Maitree Intusut] about the bomb at the OrBorJor offices [on Thursday, August 1] and we have asked all media to be careful about how they cover this news. We have had a good response from them.

“There is no need to be worried about terrorists in Phuket. The US warning covered only the Middle East and North Africa, not Phuket.

“In any case some 300 to 400 US sailors and Marines will be arriving at the Phuket Deep Sea Port soon,” he said, referring to the imminent arrival of a US Navy warship.

Yesterday the US ordered 19 embassies in the Middle East and North Africa to close temporarily because of intelligence indicating that the Al Qaeda network in Saudi Arabia and Yemen is about to attempt a major strike in the region, possibly to coincide with Eid al Fitr, when Muslims celebrate the end of the Ramadhan fast. This year that falls on Thursday this week (August 8).

Other countries such as Britain and Germany followed the US lead and also closed their embassies.

AFP reported that the State Department late last week issued a worldwide travel alert to US citizens, warning of the “potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure”.

The logic that having a US warship there makes it less likely to be a target escapes me, unless he is implying that, since they would be a bigger target then residents and tourists would be safe.

Were any intelligence agencies involved in this comforting assessment, or did he and the Governor simply decide it?

(Bali didn't see it coming either)

Since when was Phuket part of the Middle East or North Africa?

Why have the police even commented on this issue?

When the US Navy visit is cancelled at short notice, this is the time for questions and answers......................wink.png

How dare you question him FARANG!

He has power, FACE & lots of shiny badges - if he says it then it must be true!

One of these "people" said somehting similar to me! In total and utter disgust that I would dare to question him, he even asked me "do you know what uniform this is?"

My wife then asked me to leave, as I was laughing so much!

They would rather make face then accept the fact of a potential threat! We all know just how safe it is, especially in the deep south!

Just like there are no terrorists in Thailand and then 3 days later Iranians get caught building bombs, only caught after one blew his own leg off.

Because his head is too big? In more ways than one.

There is an intelligence agency here.

It's called, PTEA (Phuket Tarnishing Enforcement Agency) - they will arrest anyone tarnishing Phuket's "image."

After all, there is a lot of money at stake, and they can't afford the truth to get out. :) :)
