Police and local people examine the bell.

PHUKET: -- Thalang Police received a bizarre call yesterday afternoon (September 29) from Natthakarn Rattanapan, 33, of Term Fan Village in Baan Manik.

A man had come to her, she said, and attempted to sell her a large brass bell of the type normally seen only in temples.

Officers promptly went to the scene, where they were shown the 30-kilogram brass bell, crafted in traditional Thai style, wrapped in a fertilizer bag and sitting on a two-wheel hand trolley.

Next to the cart the police found a half-empty bottle of Chinese whisky and an empty glass.

Ms Natthakarn told them that a man aged around 50 years, carrying the bottle of whisky and dragging the trolley behind him had offered to sell her a bell for B1,200. Amused and intrigued, she told him she wanted to see the bell before she could consider buying it.

To her astonishment, he unveiled the temple bell.

She asked him where he had got it from. He told her he was a bell founder and had brought the bell from Pakrongcheep Village in Tambon Thepkrasattri.

He had to sell the bell, he said, because his boss didn’t have money to pay him.

Ms Natthakarn called the police. When the man heard her doing this he ran away, leaving the bell and the whisky behind.

The police are now looking for him.
