BANGKOK: -- Thailand's Transport Ministry hopes to install surveillance cameras in all inter-provincial buses to monitor drivers' behavior.

The ministry believes the CCTV cameras will help reassure passengers that they will be able to enjoy smooth and safe trips, Deputy Transport Minister Pong Chewananth said.

Pong said he has ordered Transport Co Ltd, which oversees 800 state buses, to study the feasibility of installing cameras before the end of the year.

"The CCTV will work like a black box in an aircraft by recording what happens in and outside the buses," Mr Pong said.

Under the ministry's plan, each bus will have five surveillance cameras.

Does Pong's brother own a camera shop?

Will that be before or after the speed control systems, that were announced 6 months ago, will be installed.

If the drivers or operators of the busses have acces to it, it won't help much, most of the overland busses run under one same name but operated by private companies or single owners!

A headline coming soon: "Bus crash. Driver flees with CCTV cameras".

I would have though a more urgent issue would be to install

seat belts for every seat, anchored securely to the floor, with

steel plates underneath .

But I suppose will never happen ,as the operators would be

squealing like pigs over the cost !, profit before customers

every time.

I think I missed that announcement............. but yes, do that one first.

They may also want to consider more brake inspections and preventive maintenance (I know they don't understand what that is), as it seems most bus accidents are reported as a result of 'brake failure.' I suppose that could also be construed as failure to apply brakes due to intoxication, sleeping, or drug use. There is no safe way to travel in the Kingdom.

It would'nt make me feel any safer!

five cameras to monitot the driver? Crikey, I could monitor a whole house with five cameras!

Hey come on, you all have been on these buses just as I have been most of the drivers are clowns they drive like there is no tomorrow there should be speed limiters and tachographs installed and should be checked on a regular basic by the police and severe penalties imposed on the drivers and company when they break the speed limit.

CCTV cameras, what are they gonna do? Record all the bad weather that causes all those accidents?

Nice little window dressing exercise, as has been said regular maintenance, professional driving standards, regulated hours of driving and statuary rest periods as imposed in Europe and I think the U.S. and Canada also.

No doubt some relative or a friend has an interest in C.C.T.V. camera sales and installation thus Deputy Transport Minister Pong Chewananth feels the need for the implementation of this scam scheme and of course on the horizon no doubt is the vision of a nice little commission on the deal too perish the thought..whistling.gif

Don't you mean record all the bad spirits that cause all the accidents whistling.gif

Thinking about it more, perhaps 6 would be more helpful. The last one to be mounted and fixed to the drivers head so we could see which way he ran

The only thing cameras will show, is when the driver falls asleep, and when he wakes up, like the last time (and I mean the LAST time) I rode a bus.

sounds like a bad excuse to charge more money for bus fare. maybe they should spend that money on say drivers training, maintenance or perhaps drug and alcohol tests for drivers

... and the evil spirits. tongue.png

This is simply lip service in order to try to detract from the horrible performance record of this system and it will also provide a nice little money earner like the clocks in parliament. Just more of the same inane BS that is spewed out on a daily basis.

The majority of problems that beset this country are due to incompetence, stupidity, dereliction of duty and greed.

This country has a horrendous record for its lack of ability to install and maintain CCTV system. How many of the current system that have been purchased for a myriad of function actually work at all. Very bloody few.

Again a waste of money to cover up bad behavior from bus personal this time. CCTV cameras don't make better drivers, just add to the operation costs. For less they could educate their drivers and other personal what working in a service market is.

"We have the engineers", followed by buses shown being constructed with wooden frames.

A nice little backhander for some corrupt little pigs at the trough.

Nothing more, nothing less.

How does this prevent anything??

who is going to watch all the recorded footage? crying.gif

or is that only done when the accident allready happened .....which is a little late..... and the cameras and recording system are even likely to be destoyed in the accident.

A couple of months ago there was this "great" idea of installing GPS tracking system in every bus (????) don't know how this is going to prevent anything ...but maybe better to install a gps tracking device under the drivers skin so he can be found when he flees the scene....

Just hand out more yaba tablets to keep drivers awake like they did in the 70's. 80's and 90's.

If the drivers or operators of the busses have acces to it, it won't help much, most of the overland busses run under one same name but operated by private companies or single owners!

Some thing I have noticed many times when driving behind a bus, they are normally six wheelers but on many I have noticed that the rear twin wheels have had one wheel taken off so they have 1 wheel on each side instead of 2 on each side, this is to save little fuel and rubber, police never look for that. To much paper work. Or they do not know they should have 2 on each side

Good idea.....5 CCTV cams per bus....800 busses...4000 units at the "Thai" budget price of Thb 75000 each..(just seems a reasonable price)..yeh...Thb 300million should just about cover the costs nicely.....

but with video evidence how will they put the blame on mechanical malfunction?
