THAI plane’s tyre bursts after landing

A Thai Airways International (THAI) plane’s rear tyre burst shortly after it landed safely on the runway at Mae Faluang airport in Chiang Rai this morning.

Flight TG 130 landed safely on the runway at about 9.30 a.m. and was on the taxiway to the airport terminal when a loud explosion was heard. It was later found to be the burst of a rear tyre on the right landing gear of the plane.

Nobody was injured and THAI officials said it was not a burst but just the tyre deflated after landing.

CHIANG RAI: -- A passenger plane of Thai Airways International had one of its tyres burst shortly after it landed at the Mae Fah Luang Airport in Chiang Rai Tuesday morning.

The accident happened at 9:29 am and no one was injured.

While the TG130 flight was taxing to a parking bay of the airport, a rear tyre on the right side exploded.

Officials were still checking for the cause of the accident.

Blow outs on aircraft tyres are relatively common.

I was once told by a Pilot: "Its likely that you've been on a flight that has blown a tyre on landing without noticing"

I can't find any Aviation stats for tyre blowouts on landing, however, a web search brings up numerous examples.

Jet aircraft Wheel Assemblies have a meltable fuse plug to allow deflation of the tire if it over heats. The tires will overheat if too much braking is applied. Two things, If the fuse fails to melt the tire will burst. The problems occurrs when a pilot applies max braking to shorten the landing roll. Sometimes because they land too far down the runway and need to stop or more often to make the first turn off of the runway.

The other purpose is to deflate the tire if it over heats during taxi or take off roll. This prevents the overheated tire from bursting in the Wheel Well and causing damage to components in the Wheel Well. The heavier the aircraft the more the tires will heat up during taxi. They will also heat up more quickly if under inflated

How in the hell do I know this, because I am 78 years old and started working on aircraft at age 15, both commercial and military. I am still a Technical Consultant for a large Aircraft Leasing Corp.

Thai Airways International may, in some people's opinion, not be best the best airline in the world. But, I can assure you they are a good and safe airline. I have managed aircraft that have been worked by Thai and we have aircraft at NOK that I do audits on.

Being a tyre guy. Tyre (earlier) damaged by a piece of debris/metal on a runway and yarns broken...... Maintenance, maintenance.

That is incredible There it is in clear view "The Tire Burst" but then a Thai official says it did not burst it just deflated.

I think this is the way the entire Thai culture runs on half truths.

So sad that they feel they must down play a situation rather then telling the public the real facts

CHIANG RAI: -- An Airbus aircraft operated by Thai Airways has suffered a tyre explosion shortly after it landed at Mae Fah Luang International Airport in Chiang Rai province.

The flight, numbered TG 130, was traveling from Bangkok′s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

All 179 passengers and 10 cabin crew were unharmed from the incident, as the pilot successfully brought the plane to its docking bay.

The airport maintenance team later replaced the damaged tyre with a new one, and the aircraft resumed its operation shortly afterward, bringing another load of passengers to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Reportedly, the airport maintenance team had replaced the impracticable tyre with the new one, and the aircraft continued to operate again shortly afterward.

Mr. Damrong Klong-Aksorn, the director of Mae Fah Luang Airport, told our correspondent he believes the wheel was prevented by its malfunctioned brake system from rolling as the aircraft touched down the runway. He insisted that the plane would function normally with the new set of tyre.

In September, a Thai Airways flight skidded off the runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport, injuring a number of passengers during the hectic evacuation. Several officials have blamed the incident on presence of malicious spirits.

The tire pictured in post #8 is "flat spotted" through at least a dozen plies. This would be due to the wheel being locked during touchdown (malfunction of locked wheel protection) or wheel locking during braking (anti-skid malfunction). It has nothing to do with "pilot technique" or how hard you brake. It is a system malfunction, plane and simple...

The fuse plug in the wheel is of no use for this kind of damage, as heat transfer to the wheel is required before it can work. Fuse plugs work well for excessive heat generated by the brakes not the tires. In this case the heat generated by the tire skidding would have taken a few minutes to heat up the nitrogen the tire is filled with, causing the pressure to increase and the weakened tire to blow out on taxi-in (normally within 15 minutes).

On landing the wheel has locked up under heavy braking causing the tyre to flat spot consequently making it easy to blow.

Pretty easy to see that the brakes remained locked on this wheel, and the tire was dragged in one position until the tire burst from lack of rubber. Not unusual to have this happen, but unusual to make up a story about what happened. Interesting to see what a 4 month investigation will unveil. Overweight stewardess?

If the wheel was locked by defective brakes how come we can see the site of the blow out? Just asking and seeking an intelligent answer.
