Watch the Saints/Dogs game. Jack Billings our number 3 pick is well out of his depth and I don't think he will be ready for the big time for at least 2 or 3 years. He looked scared and overwhelmed. Eli Templeton in the rookie draft looks a ready made player 18 years of age and was not fazed by the big boys or got scared like Billings. The guy has some skills both with hand and foot. Hopefully the saints can elevate him.

How old is Billings?

Born 18th August 95, 18 yrs old and 183 cm 73 kgs he is a skinny little boy. Eli Templeton was born 16th August 95 is 183 cms and 74kgs still a skinny kid but showed great courage up against the big bodies, was quick, agile and kicked a couple of goals

Top draft picks do not always make it in the big league. Lesser likes make it also. Look at the likes of Hird pick 57 for Essendon went on to become an elite and captain. Stephen Milne never picked in a draft but became an elite. Pods from Geelong, Barlow from Freo

They need to get a bit weight on...80-85 kilos maybe?

Swans won that easily enough... Butterfingers Reid kicked a few for Sydney and looked solid enough.

No Goodes, Buddy or Tippet playing tonight

Goodes will not be back until about round 4 and they think Tippet round 2

Love this pic.

Look at the leg. Looks like it is going to do a 360. Just one of those camera shots

Collingwood's Marley Williams convicted of GBH

Collingwood young gun Marley Williams has been convicted of grievous bodily harm for breaking a man's jaw in a brutal one-punch attack outside a nightclub.

Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/collingwoods-marley-williams-convicted-of-gbh-20140221-334zs.html#ixzz2tuNTaoRn

With the attention that "coward punches" have gotten in the press back home, I feel that Williams has possibly been dealt with rather harshly, especially considering this happening back in 2012 - before "coward punches" became "in vogue".

That being said, haven't seen the footage (if any) of the incident so my critique is but from an armchair with a frothy in a stubby holder.

Having been the victim of a coward punch myself, again, before they became "fashionable" (for all the wrong reasons), I think GBH is a bit too much.

I don't think he will get prison time because as you said this was prior to the new sentencing laws for the cowards punch. If he did I am sure there will be an appeal. I think a conviction and a suspended sentence at the most.

The victim was grievously injured enough to require an emergency airlift to Perth. It wasn't just a run of the mill cracked jawbone.

IMO, rarely an excuse for these types of attacks/punches. being under the influence of Alcohol/drugs as an excuse doesn't cut it for me. You choose to put it in your body so you are responsible for the consequences Someone calls you a few names? Be a man and ignore it. You have to be fairly insecure to want to punch someone like that.

If you want to go and punch someone you can get in the ring or the cage, whichever floats your boat. At least then it is amongst willing participants.

I see Demetriou and Koch want to decide who players can be friends with now.

What do you think?

http://www.watoday.com.au/afl/afl-news/port-adelaide-president-david-koch-slams-richmond-over-jake-king-20140221-3355j.html

Yeah, from a club standpoint I agree 100%.

I wouldn't want my players hanging around with criminals and unsavoury types. It reflects badly on the club and opens up the player to all sorts of compromise. I dont know if you can stop them doing it, but it can be made clear that their future is bleak at the club if it continues.

When done in the public eye it is aligning that player and the criminal together. In this case, does anyone seriously believe anymore that outlaw motorcycle gangs are just social clubs?

Young kids, who hero worship their fave player then start to think it is cool to hang out with dirtbag crims.

There is difficulty in the case of when the players family itself is a bunch of crims, but they can choose their friends.

Like getting pissed, taking drugs, drink driving, assaulting people, what you do off the field in professional sport does matter these days.

I agree 100% It's not just professional sportsmen/women who have to choose their friends wisely. If an Ambo or copper was mixing with these types they would be out on their arse very quickly.

I think Demetriou and Koch are correct it could cost the club and the sport huge amounts in sponsorship and could lead other players astray The club comes 1st. If King wants to consort with these guys that is up to him but he has choose football or criminals.

I tend to lean the other way. I don't think the AFL, nor the player's employer, really have a right to choose who he is allowed to be friends with. The friend could be a lifelong buddy or even a relative. Doesn't another Tigers player have a bikie old man?

Certainly the club could set some rules, such as the miscreant is not to be on club premises, as they have done in this case, but they can't sack a player for consorting, (Collingwood would have to disband!) The player definitely has to meet standards of behaviour or risk sacking from the club, but I don't believe the club has a right to interfere in someone's life to the extend of deciding who their friends can be.

Ben Cousins , and his mate Gardiner, would be examples for both sides of the argument. They were well known for hanging out with some of the nastiest crims in Northbridge and we know how they went in life, while still excelling on the field.

You're a former copper aren't you Chooka? Don't tell me you didn't have some contacts from the bad side of town. I did, to help with my job.

It's not like Eddie to make a comment is it.

“Marley defended himself by throwing one punch,” McGuire told Triple M radio in Melbourne today.

“Marley fervently believes he was defending himself and that he was in danger of copping a hiding outside and that these guys had been into him all through the night.

“But the jury sat for two and a half hours and came up with a different verdict to that.”

http://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/21587348/mcguire-backs-marley-williams/

I would be well pissed off if it was my friend or relative on the receiving end and read this.

Just like Eddie and the Goodes "king kong" saga, he doesn't know when to keep quiet.

IMO, no probs to come out and support him, a different kettle of fish entirely to come out

and say stuff against the verdict.

At the moment there's just not enough of the story out there that paints a full picture...

My opinion could go either way depending on getting the full picture.

Eddie's never short of jumping the gun on anything, when it all comes out he'll worm his way out and bring up something like the CoLA debate to take the heat off... All will forgotten within a month..

Croc, mate I get what you're saying as well. The fact that the bloke he assaulted - seemingly - copped a beating worthy of more than a fractured jaw.

That being said, given that I was on the receiving end of one of these 'in vogue' assaults - I copped a broken jaw, nose and a fractured eye socket - and the guy who handed me that was on the end of an 'assault occasioning actual bodily harm' charge, though location (CBD) could have played a part in that.

There's probably a lot we haven't heard or been told...

They are serious injuries GS.

In your opinion, in your case what penalty do you think your attacker should have got? What penalty did your attacker actually get?

I was no oil painting that's for sure.

The sad part about my case was I knew the guy who did the damage, considered him a mate earlier and was prepared to forgo the charges for a simple apology and understanding of why...

Neither came and actually seeking out those things actually stoked the fire afterwards..

I think a non-guilty plea leading to a full blown court case and being found guilty by a jury would have resulted in a custodial sentence, a guilty plea at a later stage (plus full admission during initial police investigations) but still early enough to get a discount, resulted in a good behavior bond (whether or not a conviction was recorded I'm not sure) plus fine and compo to me for medical.

Punishment fit the crime? To be honest, probably not on the face of it.

But I knew the guy, it was seemingly out of character as far as I knew, so I was ok with a non-custodial sentence. I would have liked an explanation of what made him snap to put it all to rest.
