Essendon Football Club players issued with show-cause notices by ASADA over 2012 supplements scandal.

ESSENDON players have been issued with show-cause notices for doping.

The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority served the notices on players this afternoon over the club’s 2012 supplements program.

The decision ends a 16-month probe and throws the 2014 AFL season into turmoil.

ASADA has been investigating what Essendon-appointed investigator Ziggy Switkowski described as ‘a disturbing picture of a pharmacologically experimental environment never adequately controlled or challenged or documented within the club”.

Any charges against Essendon players and officials will ultimately be heard by an AFL tribunal, with a maximum two-year ban applicable for a player found to have used a banned drug.

Essendon is expected to challenge ASADA’s findings in the Federal Court.

Bombers chairman Paul Little said in a statement on the club’s website today: “I can confirm we are exploring all legal options for our players in the unlikely event they receive show cause letters from ASADA — we make no apologies for that.”

AFL chief Gillon McLachlan told the Herald Sun tonight in response to the development: “I can’t comment”

Lets look on the bright side. Brendan Goddard may get the captains spot he has been craving for years. Maybe the captain of six (6) at the Downunder Bar in Chiangmai but at least he will be captain of something.

Suck it up Goddard you traitor. Blaahaablaahhaclap2.gif and kiss my little rear end

nah he can sit on mums sofa back in Toongabbie Vic (Pop 50) and watch the AFL on T.V whilst growing old waiting for Essendon to return to the AFL in 2 yrs. By that time he will be 34 without match experience and crying saying why didn't I stay with the saints, may not be winning but at least I would be playing.

Melbourne to win on Sunday.

I'm wondering if the Essendon players might rally and strengthen now the notices have been given. It of non drug bonding and all that.

Besides, Melbourne can't kick enough goals to win matches biggrin.png

The Swans Port game not shown on Australian Network. Not happy

I feel your pain this week.

I'll be getting the GC v West Coast game instead on TV.

Back to the computer this week to stream it...

Melbourne captain Nathan Jones has signalled his admiration for how players affected by Essendon's anti-doping investigation have stuck together.

Melbourne captain Nathan Jones says the entire AFL system has compassion for players under a cloud from the anti-doping investigation.

After a 16-month investigation into supplement use at Essendon in 2012, 34 players were reportedly issued "show cause" notices on Thursday afternoon.

A protracted assessment process, and potentially legal action, awaits, with the prospect of two-year playing bans now a clear possibility.

Jones said he had put himself in the shoes of the affected players, and had sympathy.

"You feel for the position they're in," he said.

"I don't think any player envies them, there's a lot of compassion amongst the entire playing group across the AFL for the Essendon players.

i like GC against West Coast. Eagles home game, but if GC is going to be a genuine top 8 finals contender they need to win away from home. Good test

North or Adelaide? I favour North at the moment...though they have let me down about 8/10 times this year.

I think Freo should win but they have their fullback and centrehalf back out.

Richmond are due a good game though.

Same could be said for North against Ade too I guess.

This one and the WCE are real hard to pick. There also seems

to be a bit of support for GWS as well.

LIVE IN 10 MINUTES GUYS.

LIVE: Essendon chairman faces the media

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-06-13/live-little-speaks

So Essendon is basically saying that the investigation was illegal and they are taking the AFL and ASADA to the Federal court. That could take years and millions of dollars.

What then if the courts rule in favour of Essendon, does WADA step in? Most of the players could be retired before there is a conclusion to this saga.

WADA would get involved if Essendon are successful in arguing that the investigation was illegal. Expect Essendon to relocate to Lausanne for high altitude pre-season training followed by their Home games for season 2020 to be played at the local football park down by Lake Geneva for the next couple of years whilst the rest of the board pursue the case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

AS you say GS, Lawyers 1 , AFl 0

Strong statement and press conference from Essendon.

fast forward to season 2016. Essendon are top of the table...finals coming up....they lose the court case...best players suspended

Can't believe the players have been handed a show cause notice. How could they be expected to know that their coaches and specialist staff are giving them dodgy stuff to take? Must be a human rights issue in there somewhere.

This is a cloud that will hang over the whole Essendon club - players, coaches, administrators - for years. It's not like singling out an individual like Marion Jones and throwing the book at her. The implications for the players' careers and the viability of the club are much wider.

I'm angry, but I guess that's just being unrealistic.

I forgot to tip a margin for the Hawks v Carlton game facepalm.gif

I saw that your margin was 28, I wondered what happened. Ron19 was 1 off the margin. Well done.

Does it automatically use a default number?

I forgot once and it used the number I used the week before.

I picked a margin of 21 and was hoping like heck that Roughie

would kick his last shot for goal out on the full. Not to be though.

Nice work Ron19.
