Popular Post EricBerg
I suppose this topic will not get many reactions. It's business as usual in Thailand. In any other country it would be the main topic in the media. My sympathy to the victims and their families.
Popular Post chooka
Looks more like a truck than a bus. The usual excuse brakes failed but no one ever learns the lesson and conducts regular mechanical and safety checks.

bangkokheat
i think its time the government put up the price of cigarettes and alcohol again to helb curb these accidents, that should do the trick
Popular Post Pomthai
Its not brake failure. Its moronic driving with minimal enforcement of rules of the road and a complete farce of a driving test. Compounded by the fact that the majority think that putting 30 children in a pick up truck is ok. The fact that the number of children is reported without question speaks volumes. RIP to the poor victim. Sadly there will be many more.
Popular Post JRSoul
In Oz, we have road signs "STEEP HILL. HEAVY VEHICLES ENGAGE LOW GEAR". This is the engine can be turned off to retard the vehicle if the brakes fail. I have to wonder what gear this truck was in, if any.

This is disgusting, Pick-up for 30 students, brake failure ?? front discs and rear hand brake ??? It is not about western standards really is it ?? when you have these mini buses with government officials escorted by police in luxury vans that is better than western standards . Every official event laid on even in small communities is lavishly done up with 300 meters of coloured material wrapped round tables huge tents erected, and household furniture delivered for VIP to sit on. Just for some head of tambon and cronies, that is better than the west lays on. When it comes to School transport-health care-school facilities-elderly care-invalid care-mental care. Disgusting attitude. You see money is available but priorities are wrong. Nothing to do with "it's not the west" Everything is near geared to wealthy and supposedly vip people. When you talk about VIP here it can mean a lowly officer in a small town--he is VIP---it's a joke. My main rant is these kids should never be treated like cattle, in trucks taken to school.

Nothing to do with bad people, ingnorance, bad systems, GREED etc. The dreaded H.. word for brake failure springs to mind. Here at Thai Visa unfortunate events like this, or actually any event, is just one more opportunity to bash Thais and Thailand. If only Thailand were just like the paradise the posters came from back in farang utopia (and from which the same whiners fled because they couldn't afford the expense of living in a nanny state). Yes, well-paid,well-trained drivers of well-maintained vehicles would be nice as would state-of-the-art emergency transport. And, as we all know, back in the west all of these things are "free," if you ignore the burdensome taxes, unchecked fiat currency printing and trillions in debt being used and which will be our special gift for future generations. In the meantime some sympathy for the family of the deceased child might be nice from all those who consider themselves spokesmen for the advanced western civilized world. Post without seeing the truth. I agree sometimes westerners say " it's different where I come from" If you read my earlier post it spell out what is reality here how it can be the same-how money is managed here is deplorable =outrageous. Thailand has world standards for SOME when it wants to have. These other important things it can have easily are swept away because they are not lining pockets, and kids are not as important as officers in small government departments.

MrBrad
Use lower gears...not a chance. Assuming that the vehicle has a manual rather than automatic transmission, I would bet that most drivers--professional or otherwise--don't shift into a lower gear, but rather into neutral when power is not needed, e.g., when going downhill or when approaching a stop sign. Saves gas, I guess. It's a new and dangerous way of thinking.
scottymdt
Sad sad story my heart goes out to those involved, But it is to true that to many people drive with little or no respect for safety of them selfs or others. All you need here is some flowers hanging from your mirror and pray for luck and you will be fine there will be no need to drive sensibly. leggo
The management of the road systems by both the police and the government has become a total disgrace and even with threats from a Russian Tourist Organisation a few months back absolutely nothing is being done to improve the situation. I live in Rayong myself and the standard of driving here is not only appalling but selfish, lazy and totally out of control> Don't think I have ever seen any sort of controls. What more is there to say!

Amazing that the government wanted trillions for trains and children have to risk their lives to come and go from school. Honestly, they just don't care.
