Gunmen spray bullets into house of ACT chairman Pramon Sutivong



BANGKOK: -- Unknown gunmen sprayed bullets into the house of Anti Corruption of Thailand (ACT) chairman Pramon Sutivong before dawn today, causing damages inside the house.

Mr Pramon is also chairman of the board of Toyota Motor Thailand and a board member of Siam Cement Group.

According to the police, the gun attack on Mr Pramon happened at about 3.00 a.m. today at his residence on Soi Prasartsuk off Yen-akart road in Chong Nonsee area of Yannawa district.

Unknown number of gunmen fired over a dozen of shots into the house and then fled.

5-6 bullet remnants were found inside the house. Some furniture inside were damaged by the bullets. However there was no injury.

Mr Pramon was earlier reported to be among major financial supporters of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) listed by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

However when some of the names targeted by the DSI was leaked to the media, the DSI then withheld the list and did not announce as it had earlier said.

The list also included Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhya who died on 17 March 2012.

Meanwhile in the attack on the Criminal Court building last night, initial inspection by forensic police suspected it might be an attack by M 79 grenade as two large glass panels were broken.

This is what the administration has directly inspired - vigilantism. This is what happens when the DSI takes the law into their own hands and makes spurious allegations to companies of supporting a protest movement that the Constitutional Court itself has deemed to be constitutional. Allegations are made. Then rescinded. Then made again. Then leaked. Guilt by association are McCarthy tactics, and they are as effective now as they were sixty years ago. In one day, both the Criminal Court and a private citizen were the object of armed attacks. As the DSI continues unabated to compile its " lists ".

ACC, NACC...there are always the ""right" peoples to fight against corruption. Maybe he plan to do his work, than this was the last warning. Seems this "war" is being fought on two fronts. Chalerms police working in the day light. Thaksin's police working under the cover of darkness.

Shooting up the house of this elderly man who has a distinguished record of service as CEO of Siam Cement and is now doing spirited public service in his retirement by heading up the ACT is a repellent act that can only reflect badly on the government and its supporters and confirm their obvious stance that greed and corruption are good. Disgusting.

Let's hope Chalerm's CMPO can proved its worth by arresting the culprits quickly.

I don't see any reason why any govt should openly and unreservedly denounce such an attack as there is no evidence at this stage to point to anything political.

Like you said, as chairman of the ACT, he might have a lot of enemies. As a board member of Toyota and SCG, there is also the possibility that this a a business conflict.

Immediately pointing fingers at either reds or yellows or whatever colour is just nonsensical.

Does not the fact that he is (allegedly) sponsoring the PDRC who want to eradicate corruption imply something about his desire to get rid of it?

Besides, Toyota and Siam cement are not going to be paying or extorting corruption money to or from anyone, are they!!!
