Spirited Wisut wins in Malaysia

Alor Setar, Malaysia

Wisut Artjanawat of Thailand holed a crucial birdie on the last to defeat R Nachimuthu of Malaysia by one shot at the PGM Sime Darby Harvard Championship yesterday.

Wisut was pushed to the limits by Nachimuthu but the talented Thai sealed the deal with a clutch putt from inside 10-feet for a five-under-par 67 at the RM200,000 (approximately US$60,000) season-opening Asian Development Tour (ADT) event.

Nachimuthu battled tooth-and-nail for a superb 64 while Chan Shih-chang of Chinese Taipei settled for third following a 68 at the Harvard Golf and Country Club.

Wisut, who won a title in Sabah in January, stayed focus on the task of winning his first ADT title and was not aware by the late challenge from Nachimuthu until the 17th hole where they were squared.

Relying on a hot putter, which was the key to his success, Wisut calmly sank the winning putt as he romped home to an impressive 22-under-par 266 total to win US$10,650 and earn six Official World Golf Ranking points.

"To be honest, I didn't know about Nachimuthu's score until I finished the 17th hole. I was very focused and I just concentrated on playing my own game. I'm so happy that I've won," smiled the 32-year-old Wisut.

Wisut played on the Asian Tour from 2005 to 2010 without much success but has turned his game around after adopting a healthier lifestyle by cycling every day.

Rubber farmer hurt
The Sunday Nation

NARATHIWAT: -- A rubber farmer was injured when a home-made mine exploded yesterday in Narathiwat's Rangae district in what police suspect was an attack by insurgents.

The explosion, which took place at 4.40am at a rubber plantation in tambon Tanyong Limo, injured 60-year-old Chid Rattanaphrom's leg. Police said insurgents aimed to kill and threaten Buddhists so they leave the area.

A few hours later marine officers destroyed two bombs, which suspected insurgents had planted at a site in tambon Sala Mai in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district, where they had erected a banner attacking the government.

It is suspected insurgents planned to detonate the bombs when state officials removed the banner.

In Yala's Raman district, a chicken reportedly detonated a mine on Raman-Tha Thong Road in tambon Kayu Bokoh at 8.05am yesterday but no-one was injured. The home-made mine was reportedly planted in an attempt to harm state officials when they removed a banner critical of the government but no one went near it. A fake bomb was discovered at a bridge about 100 metres from the site of the blast.

Police believe the bomb was planted by a group led by wanted insurgent suspect Sofwan Sama.

Protesters move to new home in Lumpini park

BhsLcC-CcAA2zIc-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- Protest leader Suthep Thuagsuban announced Saturday night that the People’s Democratic Reform Committee has not taken a retreat for closing down the four rally stages at Pathumwan, Ratchaprasong, Asoke and Silom and merging them all at the Lumpini park.

In a farewell speech at Pathumwan stage before moving to the new home at Lumpini park, Suthep explained that the closing of the four rally stages was, in fact, a rearrangement of the protesting force to make it stronger.

Lumpini park is an appropriate site for a long-haul battle to win the war against the Thaksin regime and protesters can take to the streets every day to put pressure on the business empire of the Shinawatra family, he said.

He told the audience that the shutdown of Bangkok which lasted one and a half months had affected a lot of people in Bangkok but most of them were patient and did not complain. He thanked them for their sacrifice but however said that the PDRC agreed that the rally stages should be removed so traffic could return to normal and to ease the hardships of motorists and commuters.

Suthep will this morning (Sunday) lead protesters from the four rally sites to their new home in Lumpini park where thousands of protesters mostly from upcountry provinces have already taken shelter for over a month.

Mahaisawan intersection closed for tunnel construction

3-2-2014-10-58-35-AM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

The Mahaisawan road intersection has been closed down for two weeks beginning Saturday in order to allow the construction of an underground tunnel, according to the traffic police.

The closure of the intersection will affect the traffic on the in-bound Ratchadapisek road in a way that motorists cannot drive directly to Bukkalo intersection but have to take a left turn into Somdet Phra Chao Taksin road, make a U-turn in front of the Navy hospital and turn left into Ratchadapisek road towards Bukkalo intersection.

Any motorists who are confused about the traffic arrangement in the affected areas can call 1197 for information or help around the clock.
